Bee all you can bee with the help of an OT! 🐝

Just helping a kiddo make the most of the new school year with some helpful handwriting tips!

Our friend has difficulty holding a pencil using a functional tripod grasp, so their therapist introduced a simple yet effective tool to encourage greater finger flexion and precision during tracing and writing activities.

We love a small tool with a big impact and we always aim to create strategies that are easy to carry over at home.

This simple elastic band grip promotes a more functional and efficient grasp, which supports fine motor development and improves handwriting skills.

There are so many creative ways our therapists make developing important skills more accessible at home!

A fun Friday riddle to kick off the weekend...

Why did the kiddo come to DTA Raleigh?

To Play-Doh, duh! 😄

It’s no surprise this little one is crushing their goals …..at DTA, play is the work!

We take everyday toys and help kids (and their parents) unlock powerful learning opportunities through meaningful play.

Let’s talk about one of our favorites: Play-Doh!

Whether you’ve got jars stashed at home or remember the smell from childhood, this classic toy is more than just fun….it’s a therapy tool in disguise.

Here’s how Play-Doh builds skills while having fun:
Fine motor development
Hand strength
Creative + imaginative play
Sensory exploration
Emotional regulation (rolling + squeezing = calming!)
Following directions

So next time you pull out that squishy dough, know you're also helping your little one grow!!!

✨It's Therapy Thursday!✨

Let’s talk about one of the most important building blocks for early social and language development:✨✨✨✨ Parallel Play!✨✨✨✨✨

Around age 2, children begin to engage in parallel play—where they play next to peers, often with similar toys, but without directly interacting. While it might seem like they’re playing alone, this stage is crucial for learning how to observe, imitate, and build comfort in social settings.

From a speech and language perspective, parallel play sets the stage for:

✨Turn-taking
✨Joint attention
✨Early conversations
✨Imitating sounds and actions

This foundational stage paves the way for associative and eventually cooperative play, where real back-and-forth interaction begins — and that’s where language really starts to flourish!

🧩 Play is how children learn — and each stage matters.

Down in Durham,

Ms. Amanda can have you well on your way to peak performance.

She takes her drills very seriously — as you can tell —

but she’s got a softer side that most of the kiddos see often.

Whether pumped and dressed in pink

or suited and booted,

Ms. Amanda will have your kids moving up the ranks at school in no time.

We couldn’t think of a better person to help round out such an amazing Speech and Hearing Month.

To all of our clinicians:

This has been a wonderful Speech and OT appreciation season, and you all are truly amazing.

Hats off to you all — we salute you!

✨ It's Therapy Thursday! ✨

Let’s talk about the Critter Clinic — one of our favorite versatile tools for speech-language therapy!

This interactive, colorful playset is a powerhouse for targeting a wide range of goals:

Expressive language
Receptive language
Articulation
Early intervention

With matching colored doors, keys, animal figures, and doctor tools, the Critter Clinic opens endless opportunities for:

✨ Teaching color identification, following directions, and problem-solving
✨ Practicing animal identification, labeling, and using prepositions (“The cat is behind the green door”)
✨ Encouraging use of core vocabulary like open, go, more, and help
✨ Sparking pretend play and thematic conversation about medical care (“The dog needs a check-up”)

Not only does this clinic build critical speech and language skills, but it also fosters turn-taking, engagement, and social interaction — all in a play-based, motivating format kids love!
