What happens if my baby has a cord around their neck!?

A nuchal cord is a common occurrence. 1/3 of babies are born with a cord around their neck. We simply unwrap it, or loosen it for the baby to go thru it, rarely a cord will be quite tight and it can prevent the baby from coming after the head and may require a little more work or in extreme situations, cutting the cord immediately. It’s more common for babies with long cords to have at least one wrap, sometimes multiple wraps around the neck . It is considered to be a safeguard, if the cord is wrapped around the neck, that would prevent it from coming ahead of the baby.
The normal, healthy umbilical cord is filled with Wharton’s jelly, a soft, gelatinous substance which protects the vessels inside the cord to prevent any disruption in the blood supply during pregnancy or labor.

A client told me recently, while in the throes of labor, "Contractions are NOTHING like waves! They're all lying! These aren't waves at all!"
Sometimes labor is writhing, roaring, messy, painful, and at a certain point it gets "too big" or "too much."
Sometimes it isn't gentle or peaceful or pretty. But that's okay; it's part of the journey, part of your incredible transformation.
So let it be big! Let it be as much as it can be! This is not the time to hold back, to contain your primal intuitive self. This is not the time to be small, to shrink in fear of your own power.
Whether you have contractions like waves or not, your birth story will be yours forever, and it will be amazing in its own way.

Breech birth

Sometimes, babies are born like this.
And it doesn’t mean an automatic cesarean. Folks like Dr. Stuart Fischbein, OB/GYN and Harvest Moon Women's Health and Rixa Freeze of Breech Without Borders are making the rounds -WORLDWIDE- to train birth attendants of all kinds to attend vaginal physiological breech birth.

If your babe is breech, it’s time to get informed. The “Hannah trial” isn’t the final word. Learn why at a Breech Without Borders workshop.

"Can you see that bulge on her lower back? That is the rhombus of Michaelis.
During the second stage of labour, a combination of bones including your sacrum actually move backwards and in doing so, increases the diameter of your pelvis.
This is what is known as the opening of the back.
This is completely normal and is, in fact, an integral part of a physiological birth as it allows your baby the maximum amount of space to turn as they navigate their way out into the world.
In order to facilitate the opening of your back, you should use active birth positions where you are upright and leaning forwards.
So cool right!
And while your pelvis is expanding, your baby's head is moulding - changing shape to fit through those pelvic bones!
Your body was made to do this! And your body and your baby work together!
Birth is not something to be feared...it is something to be understood!

I am so excited to share this beautiful en caul birth gallery with you all. Jessica and Alvin labored, connected through every contraction for 12 hours on the day of the full moon. Jessica gave birth to her sweet baby girl just as she imagined it. In a birth pool in her home surrounded by a birth team she carefully thought through to support her during pregnancy, birth and the important postpartum.
Jessica kept moving and went up and down two flights of stairs a few times while working through her contractions and getting her daughter moving down and ready to come earth side.

The moment of birth was so special coming out in the sac with an added magical touch being surrounded by fairy lights around the birth tub and Jessica dancing back and forth in the water to the low hum of labor land.

I must make note that Alvin was such an incredible support and I hope these images can serve an example to all the nervous fathers out there who don't know how they can help, that they are so important during birth.

From Jessica:
I’ve always dreamed of having a natural water birth in my home. Even as a child, I'd always been amazed by the beauty of birth. I was always amazed at how a woman's body could change so drastically during pregnancy - creating, nourishing and nurturing life. I'd always taken this seriously, probably a little more seriously than my peers as my husband would say. I've always known the importance of choosing a loving, caring and supportive partner; among other things. I remember telling my girlfriends in middle school, how whenever I had a baby, I wanted my baby in water and they would come out swimming, we all laughed. I mean, those aren't the exact logistics of water birth, but you get the point. On Aug 15, the night of a full moon; that dream came true for me. I was able to let go of myself and give in to the instinctual drift of my body and roar my sweet daughter earth side with my carefully picked birth team.

“We have a tendency to talk in terms of ‘should’ and ‘must’ and telling women what to do, instead of saying, ‘This is complicated, and there are tradeoffs every minute of every day in parenting.”

New research highlights an issue that many women already know too well.

The average US couple spends $25,000 on their wedding. 🥂 I am in no way condemning spending money on your wedding. BUT...I am saying that as a society, it is normal and often expected, that you spend a lot of money on that one day. 🤔 My real issue is that, it is NOT nearly as normal or expected to invest in your CHILDBIRTH experience. Couples are more likely to cringe at the idea of paying for a childbirth class or a midwife or a birth doula or a postpartum doula or a lactation consultant, than they’d be at spending 3x as much on their wedding. 😣 Your wedding should be a fabulous and magical day. But your experience of birth will be THE most transformative event of your life. Empowering or traumatic or somehow both?! IT👏IS👏A👏BIG👏DEAL👏 Baby showers are nice, don’t get me wrong... But what if we were more okay with second hand baby gear, instead of the latest and greatest...and what if our friends and family helped us pay for that doula or that powerful childbirth education class? Or what if they had a “postpartum party” and took turns cleaning our house and bringing us food? 💗 I wish that more people knew the importance and significance of their birth experience. I want everyone to have a positive birth. I want people to know that it is worth the investment. And their enjoyment of postpartum is worth an investment. Birth workers don’t do what they do for the money. They do it because they love helping women and babies during this transformational time. 🤱 There is a movement in the birth world!!! The word is spreading that there are ways to have a better birth and postpartum experience! So let’s keep spreading the word! 🗣 What ways did you invest in your birth or postpartum experience??? Please share below to encourage others to invest in their experience! 👇 . . .
