The perception of doctors that I see on line is so wildly distorted. I have been told that doctors work for pharma and the goal is to keep people sick.
That is some flat world, conspiracy nonsense of the highest order. The medical profession is more of a calling. No one goes into medicine to make money. I remember my medical school class well, filled with idealistic, intelligent souls that were truly dedicated to helping humanity.
I work with so many doctors. Of course there are bad apples, but the majority are so fiercely dedicated to their patients. They only want to see their patients get better. I don’t know any doctors working for pharma or getting paid, and I can’t think of any that would want the illness they treat to persist. I would LOVE there to be a cure for obesity.
Unfortunately, medicine is an exceedingly difficult and trying profession. Caring for humans is stressful and can be very disappointing. As a result, doctors have some of the highest su***de and divorce rates.
The problems with medicine are multiple. Insurance companies, bureaucracies, legal issues etc.. One of the foremost issues facing doctors is the fact that we live in a sick society. People lead exceedingly unhealthy lifestyles and are faced with so many environmental bad habits and toxins that hospitals remain full and doctors are relegated to mopping up disease rather than getting at the core of the problem.
Doctors, for the most part, know that lifestyle choices make the disease BUT they feel powerless to change it. For instance, doctors know saturated fat intake increases LDL, and high LDL creates heart disease. The problem is, with the few minutes they have with a patient they know that no matter how much they counsel lifestyle, people don’t change. They also know that if they prescribe a statin the LDL comes down, and studies show it reduces heart disease.
So in the end doctors are giving statins so people can eat bacon. That is an oversimplification but it is an underlying reality. Doctors are so overburdened with thousands of sick patients, they are only allotted very few minutes to try and protect patients. Meds and surgery become only alternative. This has NOTHING to do with getting paid by pharma, which is illegal.
We need massive change, and many doctors are trying to make changes. lifestyle changes may not end disease, and meds and surgery will always have their place, but we do need to try and turn off the faucet.
