Meet Jessica, our September Teacher Spotlight! 🎉
✨I originally found yoga in 2013 as a means of preventing running injuries. I borrowed a yoga DVD from my roommate and learned some basic poses and breathing techniques by repeating the same flow every day for months. I was super shy and hesitant to practice in studios with other people, but quickly learned that sharing a practice with others creates a special type of magic.
✨Over the years, I’ve found myself drawn to my yoga practice more for its mental health benefits than for any other reason, and I bring a focus on bodily awareness and mindfulness to my classes. In teaching, one of my goals is to create a space where students can equip themselves with tools to connect with their body, mind, and spirit, both on and off the mat.
✨In 2020, I earned my 200-hour teaching license from the Kula Yoga School at Element Hot Yoga and built on that experience through additional Trauma-Informed teaching and Yoga for All certifications. I truly believe that everyone deserves safe and accessible access to yoga asanas and pranayamas – I do my best to support my students through purposeful cueing so that everyone can meet their bodies where they are that day.
✨A quote that has been sticking with me lately is from Judith Lasaster: “We don’t practice yoga to get better at yoga. We practice yoga to get better at life—especially as it changes.” I recommend her book Living Your Yoga as an easily digestible introduction to some fundamentals of yoga beyond just the poses.
✨I am eternally grateful for this ancient Indian practice and all of the people who have shared and sustained it. I’m so thankful for all of my teachers, past and present, and the community that I have found at Indigo. Getting to teach here is always a highlight in my week!
