Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025-2030.
They are released every 5 years
My thoughts:
✅ I see online people crying in their soup over this 😩😞😢😭
✅ The new guidelines picture… I on the other hand , LOVE IT!😍
✅ I have been a dietitian for 30 years. I have seen a lot of changes and MISINFORMATION over the years!!
✅ As a young dietitian, I was taught the same old same old and had to unlearn some things. And have to admit some of the things I taught were wrong!
✅ I had to Challenge some of the things I was taught.
✅ And sadly learned that our medical and food recommendations are $$$ based …..

THE NEW PICTURE PYRAMID
✅ I see whole real food from Mother Nature which is what I encourage! I say eat the way your great great grandparents ate.. as much as you can!
✅ That means less PROCESSED FOOD! I Which is what the new recommendations are all about!
✅ I have read complaints about the emphasis on protein. Well I say hallelujah! Current recommendations are old and outdated! Upset about plant proteins? It’s in there. If you open the document and read the recommendations they encourage protein from animals and from plants, they weren’t left out. Beans are in the picture. Maybe they could have scooted the picture up a little bit …🤷🏻‍♀️
✅ Veggies vs protein? Well I see protein on the left at the top and veggies to the right… at the top! . I don’t see animal foods prioritized OVER veggies!
✅ The message is simple and they said it —EAT REAL FOOD
✅ I actually like that they did not put serving AMOUNTS on here. That becomes tedious and inaccurate because a 210 pound person needs a different amount of servings than a 130 pound person.
✅ This shows to prioritize real food from nature, prioritize protein AND veggies and have some fruits, healthy fats and a few whole grains
✅ The OLD OLD FOOD PYRAMID that has “grains” at the bottom did not differentiate between rice or cereal or bread or a “whole grains”. And it said 6-11 servings. Well 11 servings is =to 165 grams of carbs other would be like eating 11 pieces of bread in one day!! No typical adult needs that many carbs from grains!

Happy New Year! I just can’t shake the Southern tradition of eating a few black eyed peas and collard greens on New Year’s Day for good luck! We only eat a few bites now! As a kid, THIS was your dinner. Usually with dumplings in the collards which I hated. I used to drown each bowl of collards and black eyed peas with lots of ketchup! Do you eat these on New Year’s Day?

Last presentation of the year was sports nutrition and performance for professionals who work with athletes. I teach athletes what, when, why to eat which is pretty simple. So what could go wrong ? Athletes can experience
✅ Confusion about which diet, paleo, carnivore, whole 30….
✅ Fear that carbs are fattening…
✅ Wanting to try keto…
✅ Thinking vegetarian diets are the way to go…
✅ Thinking if they are thinner they will be faster..
✅ Getting bad advice from influencers on social media
✅ Not eating enough to support growth…
✅ Taking healthy eating too far and can border disordered eating
✅ Relying on supplements that actually don’t work
✅ Eating junk food before competition and it does not work
✅ Being injured, and now nutrition is paramount for healing but they may eat too much or too little…
✅ Trying to lose weight when they are in season …and end up with reduced energy to compete…
✅ Needing to gain weight and it is a chore…

✅ Starting the day by skipping breakfast…sets the day for low energy output

✅ Cramping issues/electrolyte problems
✅ Altitude issues that affect nutrition
✅ All kinds of nutrient deficiencies that create all kinds of problems…
✅ Relying on energy drinks full of caffeine which can cause big health problems…
✅ And I could go on and on!

SUGAR CRAVINGS ??? Some people really struggle with a sweet tooth and Christmas time is definitely a time you may encounter a lot more sweets in your life. If you find it super hard to avoid sweets or to only “eat just one.” THIS could be your new hack.
✅ I have put information about this hack before, but it has been awhile
✅ There is an herb called Gymnema Sylvestre. It has been used in other countries for years. It is grown in places in India and Africa and there it’s name is GURMAR which literally means sugar destroyer
✅ This particular product I am holding up, has mixed this herb with peppermint oil and a few other things so it tastes more like peppermint and not quite so earthy
✅ I recommend 4 to 5 good sprays on your tongue because a lot of of times the first few pumps, Nothing really comes out
✅ Then wait about 30 seconds. Then eat something sweet. You will NOT taste any of the sweetness in the food!!!! 💥 Temptation is gone!!!
✅ I absolutely recommend you enjoy your Christmas cookies or special Christmas candy, or your birthday cake… Meaning I don’t think you should be spraying your tongue with this all day long. It’s just to be used on those times where you want don’t want to feel out of control with a sweet tooth!
