La Virgen De Guadalupe is really an ancient Mexica (Aztec) God named Tonantzin (Our Sacred Mother) The city of Los Angeles is named after her, "Nuestra Señora Reina de Los Angeles. She has been honored for over 1,000 years
Like many Goddesses in other cultures/religions Tonantzin in the indigenous Nahuatl language continues to symbolically be a goddess of fertility and the earth.
Octavio Paz, the late Mexican poet and Nobel Prize winner, wrote in “The Labyrinth of Solitude,” an essay on Mexican identity. Paz wrote that unlike Tonantzin, La virgen de Guadalupe's attributes have nothing to do with fertility or the earth. That she however serves as ".... the consolation of the poor, the shield of the weak, the help of the oppressed. In sum, she is the Mother of orphans". He goes on to say that Guadalupe is essentially a shoulder for Mexicanos to cry on.
She is one Santo I work with personally. I do work with her for matters of life and fertility, as well as for spiritual strength in matter that I feel I cannot do in my own. She has been in my life for over 18 years now. I thank her every day for what she has done for me and what she can do for others.
