✨️GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT✨️

Taylor Thompson is our final graduate spotlight of the summer! After graduating from UNC Rex residency, she completed a PGY2 Oncology Residency at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Taylor attend conferences such as NCOP and presented in the Top Ten poster session at HOPA! She also taught lectures at Wake Forest's PA school and Campbell's pharmacy school. After residency, she will return to Rex and work as a CPP in the outpatient oncology clinic!🎗️💊

How did your time at Rex help prepare you for your current role?
“My RPD Carson ensured the program was meeting my goals. I knew I had an interest in oncology, so I was able to have both an inpatient and outpatient oncology rotation. I was also able to work on projects focused on oncology, one of which included creating a CPP rotation in our outpatient oncology clinic. Gaining experience in all of these areas helped me to be a competitive candidate for second year residencies. I was able to take the rotation I had created, and that helped me set career goals which I have now been able to accomplish. I am so thankful to have had an RPD who valued my career goals, preceptors who were willing to get me where I needed to be, and co-residents that were a huge support system along the way.”

What advice would you give to prospective residency candidates?
“Think about your goals before choosing where you want to apply, whether that be location, rotation opportunities, or others. If you apply to the places that meet your goals initially, you can use the interviews to w**d out what would be the best fit. I knew Rex had opportunities in oncology and cardiology which were my areas of interest, and also had a staffing model that allowed for work life balance. Once I had my interview, I knew the supportive nature of the program met my goals and I felt like I fit right in! And the match always works out the way it is supposed to!”

Taylor we are so proud of all you have accomplished and can't wait to see what you do next!

✨️GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT✨️

Ethan Gerrald is our next graduate spotlight of the summer! After graduating from UNC Rex residency, Ethan completed a PGY-2 Cardiology Residency at the University of Kentucky HealthCare and was then hired by Tristar Centennial Medical Center as a CVICU/Cardiac Surgery/MCS clinical pharmacist. After 3 years, he recently transitioned to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he is currently serving as a CVICU pharmacist with a focus in Critical Care Cardiology, Advanced HF, & Mechanical Circulatory Support!🫀🩺

How did your time at UNC Health Rex prepare you for your current role?
“Diverse rotations, patient acuity, preceptor experience & qualifications, longitudinal requirements, mix of inpatient clinical and operational staffing helped build a strong foundation that is needed to be successful preparation for either clinical practice or pursuing a PGY-2.”

What advice would you give to prospective residency candidates?
“There will be many challenges with the transition from student to resident anywhere you go, but always remember: give yourself grace when it comes to failures, it's not how you start but how you finish, and lastly the relationships and memories that you build with your mentors and coresidents will get you through anything!”

Ethan we are so proud of all you have accomplished and can't wait to see what you do next!

✨️GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT✨️

Tyler Brouse is up next for our graduate spotlight of the summer! After graduating from UNC Rex residency, Tyler completed a PGY2 in Critical Care at Baylor University Medical Center. He was then hired on after his PGY2 to serve as a float ED/ICU Clinical Pharmacist. After 6 months, he transitioned full-time to his current role as one of two Medical ICU Clinical Pharmacists, servicing a 40-bed ICU. Tyler also serves as the PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program coordinator and chair of the Code Blue/Resuscitation Committee! 🚑🩺

How did your time at UNC Health Rex prepare you for your current role?
"My time at Rex helped me prepare for my current role by offering diverse ICU rotations (in addition to non-ICU rotations), a supportive preceptor and management team, and ample opportunities to hone my presentation and professional communication skills."

What advice would you give to prospective residency candidates?
"My biggest piece of advice to prospective residency candidates would be to have an open mind. Embrace all of your rotations, even if you don't have a strong interest in them. Eventually, every rotation you take will come back to aid you in future practice, so give each your best effort and absorb everything you can from them."

Tyler we are so proud of all you have accomplished and can't wait to see what you do next!
