Dr. Dael Waxman will once again offer his coaching sessions during our upcoming Winter Family Physicians Weekend! Between Dec. 5 and Dec. 7, he will give personal coaching sessions open exclusively to AAFP/NCAFP members. His personal coaching sessions will help you “close the gap between where you are professionally and/or personally and where you want to be,” according to Dr. Waxman. And Dr. Waxman is an expert in how physicians can do this: as emeritus professor of Family Medicine at Atrium Health – Wake Forest University School of Medicine, he first developed this service while serving as Vice Chair of the Family Medicine department.
These 30-minute sessions are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $50 added onto your event registration. Register now to attend the meeting and meet Dr. Waxman in Asheville: www.ncafp.com/wfpw

Meet Dr. Amanda Steventon in our newest member profile! Dr. Steventon works as a family physician and chief medical officer at Avance Care, PA. In addition, she serves on the NCAFP Board of Directors and Executive Committee.
Like many other physicians, Dr. Steventon came to Family Medicine first as a patient. She grew up in Maple City, KS. “I grew up in the middle of nowhere,” Dr. Steventon says. “It’s the cliche where there were more cows than people.” But even in Maple City, Dr. Steventon enjoyed the care of a local family physician. That access served her well when she faced a severe health concern at age five. “I went for my kindergarten checkup with our doctor, who noticed that I had a very significant heart murmur,” Dr. Steventon says. “I had to have an open-heart surgery with an atrial septal defect repair. So at age five, I was introduced to the world of medicine. From that point, I knew I wanted to be a physician.”

The August edition of Business North Carolina includes a health care roundtable featuring our own Exec. VP and CEO Greg Griggs. Speaking alongside leaders from NC health systems, insurance payers, and other membership associations, Greg discussed the need for primary care investment, the promise of technological advances, and other topics.
“We need more family physicians and primary care physicians to keep people healthy,” Greg said of the NC Family Medicine workforce. “We need more people to go into family medicine, general internal medicine and general pediatrics. Primary care should be a public utility in our state.”
In addition, Greg demonstrated the discrepancy between American primary care and global health care: “Most industrialized countries invest 12% to 15% of their healthcare dollars in primary care and prevention; the United States invests 5% to 6%.” He also brought the rationale for why that investment is crucial, saying, “We can conquer healthcare costs if we get people into care early and regularly. If they don’t receive primary care, they’ll land in the ER, the most expensive place to receive care.”
The full roundtable is a great look into NC health care. Beyond Greg, others in the article include: Mysty Blagg, a health care attorney with Poyner Spruill; Josh Dobson, president and CEO of the NC Healthcare Association; Michael Smith, President and CEO of CarolinaEast Health System; and Patrick Poulin, area vice president for Gallagher.

We're not done congratulating the Wake Forest and UNC Family Medicine Interest groups for their awards at the AAFP FUTURE Conference last week! The award honors medical students who encourage student interest in family medicine and family medicine programming. Both the UNC and WFU groups did exactly that, and they deserve the recognition they received at FUTURE. Congratulations!

NCAFP member and AAFP Foundation Student Trustee Andrea Augustine wrote about her experience in the 2025 NCAFP Summer Immersion program in western NC!
"I applied to the program with a few key questions in mind," Andrea writes. "What does training at a rural residency entail? How might it support my career goals? What does rural Family Medicine — particularly in non-academic models — look like? Could I see myself in that environment? I’m happy to report that the program answered all of these questions."
