This week is Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any category of mental illness. With millions of Americans living with one of these highly stigmatized disorders, community awareness and support is vitally important.

"Increasing awareness, reducing bias, and replacing shame with understanding bring us closer to prevention when possible and effective treatment when necessary."

By Simone Seitz and Caroline Rutledge, Carolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders

Historical Highlight – Dr. Paul Bertau Cornely, DrPH, was a trailblazer in medicine and civil rights, dedicating his life to breaking barriers and advancing health equity. As cofounder of the Imhotep National Conference, he championed strategies to end racial discrimination in health care. His legacy lives on at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health, where the Cornely Postdoctoral Program empowers scholars to fight disparities.

Thanks to Dr. Cornely’s vision, we continue to move forward in creating a more just and equitable health system for all.
