Pleuritis, also called pleurisy, is inflammation of the pleura and can cause sharp chest pain that gets worse with deep breathing or coughing.

Common causes include viral infection, bacterial infection, autoimmune disorders, pulmonary embolism, chest trauma, and lung malignancy.

Common findings:
• sharp, stabbing chest pain
• shortness of breath
• dry cough
• fever or chills
• pleural friction rub

NCLEX reminder:
Sharp pleuritic chest pain with sudden dyspnea is a red flag that needs prompt assessment.
