This summer, NCDSA Board Member, David Tran, and his family are going on mission trip to Guatemala to serve with the Tebow Down Guatemala organization, which helps provide resources to families. This includes a school where children can come learn and have therapies provided. They also have coffee shop that hires individuals with special needs.

We are thrilled to support the Tran family in their donation drive for supplies and YOU can help too! We will be accepting new or gently used toys, sensory items, educational items/toys, etc at our upcoming events and at the NCDSA Training Center throughout April (2621 Spring Forest Rd Suite 102, Raleigh, NC 27616).

While items in Spanish are preferred, English items that can be translated will also be a big help (for example, English word cards or flashcards are great because we can easily translate them and add the Spanish words ourselves, while books need those to be in Spanish).

Take action this month by sharing our call for Camp SHINE volunteers with teens/young adults you think would be a great fit!

Consider sharing with local schools, sports organizations, clubs, churches, colleges, etc! Our goal is a 1:1 for each camper, so that means we'll need over 80 volunteers for our two week long camp sessions!

Another fun playdate!
While playdates make for great photos, it is just a sliver of the work that NCDSA does. Behind the scenes, and seldom captured in photos, our staff are working with legislators, advocating, educating medical providers, empowering parents and teachers, and welcoming new families!

Last week the brand-new NC Down Syndrome Collective launched their quarterly Lunch & Learn series with "Exploring Meaningful Employment." Jacklyn Boheler from Work Together NC walked us through the Work Together NC Employment Toolkit, a hands-on guide to discovering job interests, building skills, and connecting with inclusive employers. Self-advocate Treana Suggs and her dad, Tracey, also joined us to talk about Treana's path to employment and what it looks like today since she's settled into a job she loves.

This webinar is for anyone with Down syndrome (or their supporter) who's looking for employment resources to start or move forward in their employment journey.

Next month, Work Together NC, TLC Raleigh, and We Will Walk with You will be hosting an interactive event connecting Wake and Johnston County families with programs supporting college access, employment pathways, daily living skills, and community belonging

Each year, hundreds of students with disabilities in Wake and Johnston counties leave the school system and enter adulthood — a transition many families describe as falling off a “services cliff.” At the same time, thousands of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Wake County are waiting for the state’s Innovations Waiver, the primary funding source for adult disability services, often for years. During that same transition period, many parents reduce work hours or leave jobs entirely to provide support, creating a dual challenge for families navigating life after high school.

To help families better understand the resources available and begin planning for the future, community organizations from across the region are coming together to host “Paths to Possibility: Exploring Adulthood — IDD Resource Summit.” The event will bring together educators, service providers, advocates, and self-advocates to share practical tools and real-world pathways for life after high school for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Sessions will focus on five key areas of adult life:
- Learning & Campus Life
- Employment & Purpose
- Natural Supports & Belonging
- Planning & Transition Tools
- Daily Living Skills

The event is designed to empower families and individuals with disabilities with practical information, personal connections, and actionable planning tools.
