Healing Transitions

Healing Transitions Healing Transitions a nonprofit organization that offers peer-based recovery services.

Healing Transitions has been providing peer driven long term residential services since January of 2001. During that time we have been very successful in empowering people who are homeless and suffer from substance use issues transition to a fulfilling life. Along with our community partners, we have been able to reduce Wake County homeless population by 25% even as the overall population in Wake

County has grown 45%. That constitutes an approximate 50% drop in the number of un-sheltered homeless individuals on our streets.

In honor of Pride Month, we’re featuring our recovery group, the Rainbow Warriors, as June’s Story of Healing. The Rainbow Warriors offers a recovery space where LGBTQ+ identifying and ally participants can gather and fellowship in a safe, supportive environment.

Hear directly from current Rainbow Warriors about why this community is so important, and come meet them at Run for Love 5K happening this Saturday, June 6th! To read the full story and to learn more about the race, visit healing-transitions.org/rainbow-warriors-2026/

Construction on our affordable, recovery-oriented housing at our Women’s Campus is well underway! Through our newest Capital Campaign, Forward Together, we are creating 17 two- and four-bedroom apartments where alumnae of our long-term recovery program can rebuild their lives surrounded by supportive peers and their children.

We are working to raise $14M for this transformational project, and thanks to our generous community, we are now just shy of $12M. Even more exciting — our friends at the SECU Foundation have offered a $1M challenge grant that will be unlocked once we reach $13M.

As spring cleaning season continues, we’re seeking a few essential landscaping tools to help care for our Men’s Campus grounds. We are currently in need of one backpack leaf blower and one w**d trimmer to support the upkeep of our campus and preserve a welcoming environment where healing and recovery can flourish.

If you have either item in new or gently used condition, we would be deeply grateful for your donation. Please contact Cheyanne Murdock at cmurdock@healing-transitions.org to schedule a drop-off at our Men's Campus (1251 Goode Street). Thank you for helping us maintain a space that fosters hope, dignity, and recovery.

P.S. This picture was taken in 2005 and features Board of Director member and Silver Chip Alumni #268 Herb Barbee (center) helping prepare the Women's Campus for its grand opening!

Executive Director Chris Budnick recently had the honor of meeting Father Greg Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries, largest gang-intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the world. Their conversation was a powerful reminder that recovery, healing, and second chances are possible when compassion leads the way. We’re grateful for leaders like Father Greg who continue to inspire communities everywhere to choose hope over judgment.

Artist Scott Nurkin recently visited our Men’s Campus to create his newest work: a mural honoring Healing Transitions legend Raeford.

More than a piece of art, it stands as a lasting tribute to a man whose compassion, wisdom, and unwavering belief in others touched countless lives. Raeford’s legacy of hope and recovery will continue to welcome and inspire everyone who walks through our doors for years to come.

We’re deeply grateful to Scott for sharing his talent in honoring this remarkable life.

The gazebo at the Women’s Campus has long served as a cherished gathering place for both staff and participants. With construction underway, the original structure was retired, but its spirit lives on in not one, but two newly built gazebos.

We are deeply grateful to our Forward Together partners, HH Architecture and Clancy & Theys Construction Company who generously volunteered their time and expertise to bring these spaces to life, adding a bit of friendly competition along the way. Their craftsmanship and commitment have created beautiful new places for connection, and we look forward to many meaningful moments shared beneath them.
