A staggering 11% of family caregivers have received formal training to assist with activities of daily living (ADLs/IADLs), and just 20% have training in medical or nursing tasks—even though many are managing complex care like injections and wound care.
Over the past decade, the number of Americans providing unpaid caregiving has surged—63 million now provide ongoing care, up by 20 million since 2015. 🔗 https://ow.ly/ce7Q50WCZtK

Bipartisan Boost for Compassionate Care: New Bill to Strengthen Palliative and Hospice Workforce

On July 17, Representatives Buddy Carter (R-GA) and Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) introduced the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (PCHETA) — vital legislation designed to expand training, education, and research efforts in palliative and hospice care. These services play a critical role in providing comfort and improving the quality of life for patients facing serious illness, while also reducing hospital stays. In supporting these caregivers, Carter highlights rising burnout and the need for proper support, while Bera notes the importance of giving patients and families access to pain relief, clarity, and dignity.

Why in‑home care is rapidly becoming the preferred standard for aging
More and more families are choosing in‑home care for loved ones. A recent study explores why that’s becoming the new norm worldwide

Why?
Growing demographic shift: By 2030, 1 in 6 people will be over 60; by 2050, it’s projected to hit 22 % globally.
Affordability: Full‑time home care costs about $6,500/month vs nursing homes at $10,600/month on average.
Tech-driven independence: Smart sensors, telehealth, wearables and automatic alerts help keep seniors safe and engaged at home.
make home care more accessible.

We’re excited to share that the Carolinas Foundation for Hospice & Home Care has been awarded a $170,000 grant from the SECU Foundation!

Over the next 2.5 years, this funding will help us develop and launch a standardized training and onboarding program for newly hired in-home aides across North Carolina. It will also include a train-the-trainer component and introduce a new certificate of completion through the Association for Home & Hospice Care of NC for aides who successfully finish the training.

We’re incredibly grateful to SECU Foundation for supporting our mission to strengthen and grow our home care workforce! 💙

New Research: Hearing Loss & Loneliness Linked to Faster Memory Decline in Seniors
According to a study from the University of Geneva analyzing data from over 33,000 older adults across Europe, individuals who experienced hearing loss—especially when paired with feelings of loneliness—showed significantly steeper declines in memory and executive functioning.
Interestingly, even socially integrated individuals who still felt lonely were at elevated risk.

Why it matters: hearing loss is common (affects ~65% of people aged 60+ globally), but often goes untreated. Addressing it via hearing aids may help reduce loneliness and support cognitive health.

✅ Interventions like hearing aids can help maintain social engagement and may slow cognitive decline
✅ Emotional loneliness—not just isolation—can magnify dementia risk
✅ Sensory health is a key modifiable factor for brain aging

If you or a loved one are facing hearing challenges, it may be time for an hearing check and supportive care to preserve quality of life as we age.
