If you’re looking for a good looking, strong, sane, and seasoned trail mule, Merle checks every box.
Merle is a 10 year old, 15.2 hand, 1200 lb john mule who has spent the last four years as a key member of our outfit and our main riding mule.
From sheep hunts in September, to elk hunts in October, to lion hunting all winter, he’s seen big country and tougher days than most. He’s never missed a beat and has always been clutch when it mattered.
Merle takes care of himself and his rider. He’ll happily spend the day with a picket mare but is just as comfortable heading out alone. He fits anywhere in the string or can confidently lead it. He packs meat and horns, crosses ice, bogs, logs, and rocks without hesitation, and is good with dogs.
He’ll even load into the back of a truck, no trailer needed. While he’s been to town and handled it well, the mountains are where he’s made his living.
Easy to saddle, bridle, shoe, and haul. He rides with a crupper or britchen and holds a saddle better than most horses.
