At Treehouse, our clients love to engage in fun obstacle courses in our Occupational Therapy gyms! Swipe to see some examples 🧗‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Obstacle courses target so many areas for skill development ⭐️
- Motor Planning (Anticipation, Planning Movement & Ex*****on of the Motor Action as well as Adjusting Movements)
- Bilateral Coordination (Walking, Running, Throwing, Jumping, Crossing Midline) 🏃🏼‍♀️
- Visual-Motor Integration (Judging distance and depth perception, adjusting body movements based on visual cues) 👀
- Balance (Static & Dynamic Balance) 👣
- Body Awareness (Spatial Awareness, Safety Awareness) ⚠️
- Strength (Core, Upper Extremity & Lower Extremity)💪🏻
- Endurance (Repetition, Physical Stamina) 😮‍💨
- Gradation of Force (Judging Speed/Distance/Weight of items, Targeting) 📏
- Sensory Integration (Tactile, Proprioceptive, and Vestibular activities)
- Creativity & Imagination (Using equipment to represent abstract ideas or items such as a blue mat to represent a river)🌈
- Executive Functioning Skills (Planning, Organizing, & Sequencing, Impulse control, Problem Solving, Working Memory)
- Self-Regulation (Attention, Frustration Tolerance, Emotional Regulation) 😊

You can set up an obstacle course at home using everyday objects around the house:
🔸Pillows: for balance or jumping over
🔸Chairs & Small Tables: crawling under
🔸Blankets & Sheets: tunnels, balance beams, climbing over
🔸 Hula Hoops: jumping in or crawling through
🔸Rope/string: jumping
🔸Broom/mop: jump over
🔸 Cardboard Boxes: pushing, crawling through
🔸 Tape/Chalk: to make a boundary that a child can jump over

Coloring or playing on a vertical surface offers several developmental benefits for children🖍️🎨

🔴Shoulder Stability: It takes more effort and muscle to keep a hand steady in the air as opposed to resting it on a horizontal table.
🔵Hand strength: Working against gravity requires increased effort on hand muscles, which helps to build hand strength and endurance. 🤚🏻
🟢Grasp Development: Coloring or writing on a vertical surface naturally puts the wrist into extension, which helps to create a more optimal grasp. ✍🏽
🟠Crossing Midline: Working on a large vertical surface requires children to reach across their body to fill in all the spaces. 🖼️🖌️
🟡Core Strength & Postural Control: Standing or kneeling at a vertical surface builds core strength, which supports an upright posture.
🔴Bilateral Coordination: Challenging a child to use one hand to hold the paper and the other hand to color targets bilateral coordination, or using both hands together to compete a task. 👏🏼

Other fun ways for children to play on a vertical surface: 🤩
✨Puffy stickers on windows
✨Lite Brite
✨Window paint or markers
✨Squiggs on window
✨Foam shapes and letters on bathtub wall
✨Lego wall
✨White board or chalkboard
✨Refrigerator magnets
✨Painting at an easel

Congratulations to Treehouse’s 2024 Employee of the Year, Christine! 💚🌳

Christine has been an integral part of the Treehouse family for the last 8+ years. She started our Occupational Therapy branch in 2016 and continues to manage our growing department.

Christine is always there to support her fellow therapists and cares deeply about her clients and their families. Her strong knowledge, calm presence, and positive mindset are just a few reasons why we are lucky to have her as part of our team. Please help us in congratulating Christine! ✨

DID YOU KNOW?! ✨

Every person has a 6th and 7th sense?!

Most individuals are familiar with the 5 senses: Tactile, Olfactory, Gustatory, Vision, Auditory.

However, there are two hidden senses - called the proprioceptive and vestibular sense.

The vestibular system helps you to identify the position of your head in space as well as directional changes in relation to your environment. Some children can be sensitive to (over-responsive) or seek out (under-responsive) vestibular input. The proprioceptive system provides awareness of where your body is in space. Children may have difficulty with proprioceptive processing if they have poor body awareness, motor planning, and postural control.

Occupational therapists provide fun, evidence-based interventions to address the body’s senses according to each child’s specific sensory system!✨💚
