Continuing Charter’s celebration of Black History Month, we recognize medical pioneer Jane Cooke Wright, MD.

After earning her medical degree, Dr. Jane Cooke Wright worked alongside her father at the Cancer Research Foundation in Harlem, which her father established in 1948. Together, father and daughter researched chemotherapy drugs that led to remissions in patients with leukemia and lymphoma.

After her father passed, Wright became the head of the Cancer Research Foundation at age 33. She created an innovative technique to test the effect of drugs on cancer cells by using patient tissue rather than laboratory mice.

Wright advanced as the Director of Cancer Chemotherapy at New York University Medical Center and an associate dean at New York Medical College.

The New York Cancer Society elected Wright as its first female president in 1971. Her research helped transform chemotherapy from a last resort to a viable treatment for cancer.

Continuing Charter’s celebration of Black History Month, we recognize medical pioneer Solomon Carter Fuller, MD.

After earning his medical degree in 1897 from Boston University, Solomon Carter Fuller became the first African American psychiatrist.

In 1904, he began pioneering work with the psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in Germany, studying the traits of dementia. Dr. Fuller was the first to translate much of Alzheimer’s work into English, including research regarding Auguste Deter, the person with the first reported case of the disease.

When he returned to the United States, Fuller continued research on Alzheimer’s disease, as well as schizophrenia, depression, and other mental illness. In 1912, he published the first comprehensive review of Alzheimer’s cases.

Continuing Charter’s celebration of Black History Month, we recognize medical pioneer Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD.

After working for years as a nurse, Crumpler became the first Black woman in the United States to receive an MD degree. She earned that distinction at the New England Female Medical College in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was the institution’s only Black graduate.

After the Civil War, Crumpler moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with other Black doctors caring for formerly enslaved people in the Freedmen’s Bureau. In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published her Book of Medical Discourses. It chronicles her experiences as a doctor and provides guidance on maternal and child health.

Currently, no known picture of Dr. Crumpler exists.

As part of Charter’s celebration of Black History Month, today we recognize medical pioneer James McCune Smith, MD.
Smith was a man of many firsts; he became the first Black American to receive a medical degree, he was the first Black person to own and operate a pharmacy in the United States, and he was the first black physician to be published in U.S. medical journals.

Thank you, Dr. Smith, for paving the way for so many.
