What a great turn out at this months Bumps and Bagels! We had a full studio of expecting families! I loved getting to share with them on how breastfeeding begins before birth- and how moms can prepare and set their feeding goals up for success! We also heard from on maternity and paternity leave in California- which can be so confusing and overwhelming- love that there is support for families on how to navigate this! Dr. Jermaine discussed the importance of pelvic floor physical therapy and shared some important exercises for pregnancy and postpartum! Then of course shared on their amazing 8-week postpartum classes where moms and babies are grouped by the same age. Each week covers exactly what you’re experiencing in that stage, with expert guests to guide you—so there’s less Googling and more confidence, support, and community. It was such a great day! Keep a look out for the next one in February! Each month may vary with different professionals in the community coming to share!

When my newborn had jaundice, hospital staff brought in formula and said, “Your baby needs this.”
Then a lactation consultant walked in and said, “You have milk! Here’s a breast pump and here’s how we support your feeding goals.”

Because of that support, I was able to express my own milk for supplementation—no formula needed for us—and my milk supply was protected during those critical early days.

Formula is not bad. In many situations, it’s absolutely necessary and lifesaving.
But support matters. Education matters. And knowing your options can completely change the outcome.

🤍 If breastfeeding or providing breast milk is important to you, have lactation support lined up before birth.
🤍 I would love to support you- see link in bio to set up your support!

Support doesn’t mean one right way—it means informed choices.

Latch takes practice.
Positioning takes practice.
Reading cues takes practice.
Confidence definitely takes practice.
You and your baby are both beginners… and beginners deserve patience, compassion, and support. 💕

🎒Who needs a weighted vest when you’re a home-visit IBCLC? 🤣
Carrying a scale, pump parts, ni**le shields, SNS, fl**ge sizes (and so much more) definitely builds muscle 💪😅

How Much Milk Should My Newborn Be Drinking?

✨ Those early days can feel full of questions — especially around how much milk your baby should be getting.

You should feed your baby responsively per their hunger cues and know that intake volumes can fluctuate throughout the day, especially with direct breastfeeding.

Here are averages for intake in the first two weeks of life. These are based on 8-12 feedings in 24 hours. 👶💛

Day 1:
Baby’s tummy is tiny — think marble-sized!
➡️ Average transfer per feed: 2–10 mL
Colostrum is milk! It is the first milk and is small but mighty — packed with antibodies for immune protection.

Day 2-3:
Milk volume starts to slowly increase.
➡️ Average transfer per feed: 5-15 mL
Expect frequent feeds (8–12 times/day) as supply builds.

Day 3-4:
Transitional milk. Breast engorgement may be occuring.
➡️ Average transfer per feed: 15–30 mL
Baby’s stool starts to turn yellow as intake increases.

Day 5–7:
Milk volume rises!
➡️ Average transfer per feed: 30–60 mL (1–2 oz)
Baby’s diapers become heavier — around 6+ wet diapers and 3-4+ dirty diapers daily.

Day 7-13:
🥛 Mature milk is established and baby’s regain or surpass their birth weight.
➡️ Average transfer per feed: 60–90 mL (2–3 oz)
Total daily intake: roughly 16–24 oz per 24 hours (varies by baby size + frequency).

💬 Remember — every baby is different! Small, frequent feeds protect the baby’s stomach and mom’s milk supply.

What matters most:
✔️ Effective Latch

✔️ Appropriate weight loss/gain

✔️ Adequate wet/dirty diapers

✔️ Baby who’s content after feeds

✨ Save this post for reference or share it with a new mom who’s wondering if baby’s getting enough milk.

This mama’s text this morning! I could cry happy tears too seeing how much of an impact it has made for her! Having a good primary breast pump and optimal fl**ge fit are so important for comfort and milk output! 💕 **gefit

Does baby latch and feed well on one of your breasts but not the other? Do they prefer one breast only?

Your newborn could be experiencing BODY TENSION!

Tightness can be caused from many things including baby’s positioning while in utero or their birthing process.
So what can be done?!
🤍 work with a lactation consultant to assist with breastfeeding positioning and latching specific for helping your baby.
🤍Address the tightness with bodywork from a chiropractor, cranial sacral therapist, pediatric OT or PT. They are trained professionals that can identify the tension and treat it with gentle touch! 👉🏻 I can refer you to some great specialist!
🤍 Support baby at home with tummy time and gentle baby massages/exercises.
