Excited to share the 4-week follow-up of my patient’s deep plane facelift and deep neck lift. After previously having neck lipo, which caused some neck laxity, we focused on rejuvenating the neck and tightening the lower face for a more youthful, natural result. The transformation is incredible, and I’m so grateful to my patient for trusting me with her journey.

I’m with my wonderful patient today to discuss the upcoming deep neck lift and deep plane facelift. She previously had neck lipo, which unfortunately caused some laxity in the neck SMAS. We’ll be addressing this issue and restoring a natural, youthful appearance. I’m not a big fan of aggressive neck lipo, as it can lead to long-term laxity. Excited to work together on this transformation!

Facelift recovery is a journey, not a moment.
At 2 weeks, swelling and bruising have significantly improved, incisions are healing well, and most patients are ready to be seen socially — this is the first major test of the surgery.
At 2 months, tissues are settling, contours become smoother, and the face starts to look more natural and refreshed rather than “surgical.”
At 1 year, healing is complete. The deep structures have fully stabilized, scars have matured, and the final, natural result reveals itself — youthful, rested, and balanced.

Understanding these milestones is essential for setting realistic expectations and appreciating how a well-performed facelift continues to improve over time.

Scarring after facelift is a common concern—but technique matters. A deep plane facelift repositions the facial tissues at their anatomical level, allowing the skin to redrape naturally without undue tension on the incision lines. By avoiding inadvertent tension on both the skin and underlying SMAS, this approach significantly reduces the risk of widened or visible scars and promotes more refined, well-healed incisions.

The term deep plane facelift is often debated—technique or marketing? In my view, it is fundamentally a surgical technique, not merely a buzzword. As surgeons, we naturally refine methods, develop our own nuances, and sometimes give our approaches distinct names when sharing our work. That is part of surgical evolution and education.

However, it’s equally important to recognize that the deep plane facelift itself is a well-established technique, and credit should always be given to the pioneers who laid its foundation. Surgeons like Sam Hamra fundamentally advanced facial rejuvenation by demonstrating the power of true deep-plane mobilization to restore natural anatomy rather than simply tightening skin.
