Change Your Diet

A healthy diet is the most critical factor in maintaining a healthy heart. Doctors recommend several specific diets for heart health, including the DASH diet, the Mediterranean diet, and the TLC diet. These diets have been clinically proven to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, thereby improving heart and vascular health. To simplify the diet recommendations, they all feature a lower consumption of certain foods and a higher consumption of other foods, as listed below.

Eat less:
saturated fats
salt
sugar
cholesterol-rich foods
processed foods

Eat More:
healthy fats and oils (olive oil, avocado oil)
soluble fibers from fruits and vegetables
plant phytochemicals like flavonoids and polyphenols in berries
whole grains
lean protein

Compression-Only CPR :
Compression-only CPR is good to know because it can significantly increase a person’s chance of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest, especially when performed immediately. Here’s why it’s important:

1. It’s Simple and Easy to Learn
• You don’t need special training to do it effectively.
• Just pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest keeps blood flowing to the brain and heart.

2. It’s Effective in the First Few Minutes
• In the first minutes after a sudden cardiac arrest, the person’s blood still has oxygen.
• Chest compressions help circulate that oxygen to the brain and organs until EMS arrives or an AED is used.

3. It Reduces Hesitation
• Many bystanders hesitate to give mouth-to-mouth, especially to strangers.
• Knowing that compression-only CPR is recommended for adults makes people more likely to act quickly.

4. Endorsed by Experts
• The American Heart Association recommends compression-only CPR for untrained bystanders or those unwilling to give rescue breaths, especially for adult victims of sudden collapse.

5. It Buys Time
• Every minute without CPR reduces a person’s chance of survival by 7-10%.
• Compression-only CPR can double or even triple survival rates when performed immediately.

Eating a balanced and nutritious diet plays a crucial role in maintaining heart health. Consuming foods rich in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, helps to lower levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and supports healthy blood pressure. Diets that are low in saturated fats, trans fats, and added sugars can reduce the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries, which is a major contributor to heart disease.

Proper nutrition also helps regulate body weight and blood sugar levels, both of which are important for reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. A heart-healthy diet includes lean proteins like fish and legumes, healthy fats from sources like nuts and olive oil, and limited sodium intake to manage fluid balance and blood pressure.

Incorporating these dietary habits not only protects the heart but also enhances overall well-being and energy levels. Over time, eating properly supports better circulation, reduces inflammation, and strengthens the cardiovascular system. Making long-term, consistent dietary choices is one of the most effective strategies for preventing heart disease and promoting lifelong heart health.
