Dental benefits and medical advocacy aren't the same thing.
It's easy to think that your insurance company is your advocate. They'd LOVE you to believe that. The problem is that it's not true. Your insurance company is a for-profit organization focused on their bottom line, not your oral health.
Insurance companies don't want to pay claims — that's why they have administrators whose job is to find reasons to deny coverage. During COVID, it came to light that some companies were actually bonusing employees for rejections. The more claims they denied, the bigger their bonuses.
These administrators making decisions about your dental care aren't healthcare professionals. They're mostly high school graduates who receive a few days of training on how to say no or give vague answers when we call about coverage.
Even when we do thorough insurance verification through our outsourced team, we still get incorrect information because these administrators are trained to be vague. The website always says "this is not a guarantee of anything we're telling you," so they're covered even when they give you wrong information.
And when we appeal denials, the second-level reviewer might be a retired periodontist making decisions about root canals — procedures they haven't performed in decades. They don't know anything about the methodology and training we're using in 2025, but those are the people determining whether you can get the care you need.
We are your advocates. We're the ones recommending what's best for your oral health, not what's cheapest for their shareholders. That's why we do the front-end work to verify benefits, provide estimates, and text you about costs before your appointment.
Your doctor should be your advocate, not your insurance company.
