🍎An Apple A Day🍎

Apples offer so many nutrients and plant compounds that help support our health. And with countless varieties, they’re an easy and delicious way to enjoy these benefits:

Fiber – Helps lower blood, cholesterol, and regulate blood sugar
Quercetin– May offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
Potassium– Helps support a healthy blood pressure
Vitamin C – Supports immune health and acts as an antioxidant
Water – Hydrates and promotes fullness

The old adage is true, “An apple🍎a day, keeps the doctor away!”

While most of us are still in grill mode this 🇺🇸4th of July weekend🇺🇸, why not add grilled zucchini to your menu to add some nutritive benefits and to balance out your plate 🍽️.

💭Did you know that zucchini is composed, almost entirely of 💧– more than 95% – which means it is very low in calories. Despite its modest calorie count, zucchini boasts a good amount of vitamin C, fiber, magnesium, and potassium. It is also a great source of carotenoids , which are known to protect against cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

A member of the gourd family, zucchini is technically a fruit, but is most often prepared as a vegetable. Zucchini can be spiralized and used as a substitute for pasta noodles, which is one of my favorite ways to eat zucchini. It can be diced and tossed into stir-fries or tacos🌮; grated and then added to baked goods 🍪and fritters; or blended into smoothies. It can also be sliced and enjoyed with hummus or veggie dip or added to sandwiches 🥪🥙.

Summer wellness should be a part of both our personal and work life. Here are some tips to get you focusing on nutrition, and to get you through the hot temperatures.

☀️Nutrition and Health During Summer ☀️

Focusing on nutrition and health during the summer season is about more than achieving body goals. One study shows that an individual’s food intake can be affected by heat—people often eat less when the weather is warmer. While this may help shed some unwanted weight, reducing food intake should be done healthily to compensate for the energy loss when the body is exposed to heat.

Tips to Improve Nutrition this Summer

Here are some tips to keep your nutrition and health in check this summer season:

1️⃣ Control your Portions 📏

Following a healthy diet does not mean you should completely remove favorite food items from the plate. Consider moderation in consumption as a better option. Don’t overindulge; stick to the appropriate serving size. This practice is a good way to train your body to be satisfied with a smaller portion.

2️⃣Aim for a Healthy Plate 🍽️

Try following a healthy plate eating plan. Balance the consumption of protein, carbohydrates, fat, and fruits and vegetables. Ideally, 50% of the plate should have fruits and vegetables, and the remaining half should be an assortment of dairy, protein, and grains.

3️⃣ Control your Caffeine Intake ☕️

Increased consumption of caffeine can increase the risk of dehydration. Caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, which can cause frequent urination. Try to limit intake to one or two cups a day to reduce the risk of dehydration, which can also cause headaches.

4️⃣ Go for Cool and Healthy Food🆒

When the temperature is high, it can be tempting to reach for sugary drinks and food items. While these sugary items can help re-energize, their nutritional value is not high. It’s best to drink water or fresh fruit juices that have natural sugars. For a healthy cool-down, try mixing different fruits and toss them in the blender to make a refreshing smoothie.

5️⃣Eat Regularly 🍴🕕

Skipping meals, doing intermittent fasting, and cutting calories have different effects on different people. The key is eating appropriately depending on your lifestyle and what your body needs. For example, more active individuals should consider a diet that includes high levels of protein and carbohydrates to help build muscles and gain energy during workouts. Individuals with a sedentary lifestyle can focus more on their micronutrient intake.

A healthy eating plan also includes monitoring your snacking—replace cookies, pastries, and cakes with healthier options like fruit, nuts, and low-fat yogurt.

Here’s to healthier summer eating!

Do you know that there is power in rest 😴❓Taking time to rest and reset is crucial on your health and wellness journey.
Do you also know that there are 7️⃣types of rest❓

Have you ever felt exhausted even after getting a full night’s sleep? You’re not alone! Many of us confuse sleep with rest, but there’s more to rejuvenation than just catching some Z’s.
Let’s dive into the seven types of rest that every person needs for overall well-being:

1️⃣Physical Rest: Our bodies require both passive and active physical rest. Passive rest includes sleeping and napping, while active rest involves activities like yoga, stretching, and massage therapy. These practices improve circulation, flexibility, and overall vitality.

2️⃣Mental Rest: Ever had a racing mind that won’t switch off? Mental rest is crucial. Take short breaks during your workday to slow down. Keep a notepad by your bed to jot down nagging thoughts that might keep you awake at night.

3️⃣Sensory Rest: Bright lights, screens, and constant noise overwhelm our senses. Combat this by closing your eyes for a minute during the day and intentionally unplugging from electronics at night. Sensory deprivation moments help restore balance.

4️⃣Creative Rest: For problem-solvers and idea-generators, creative rest is essential. Reawaken your sense of awe and wonder by appreciating nature or enjoying the arts. Whether it’s the Grand Canyon or a local park, let creativity flow.

5️⃣Emotional Rest: Emotional rest involves processing feelings and finding peace. Set boundaries, practice mindfulness, and seek support when needed. Allow yourself to recharge emotionally.

6️⃣Social Rest: Interactions can drain or energize us. Balance social engagements with alone time. Prioritize quality over quantity in your relationships. Connect with those who uplift and understand you.

7️⃣Spiritual Rest: This isn’t necessarily religious; it’s about connecting with something greater than yourself. Spend time in nature, meditate, or engage in activities that align with your values. Spiritual rest nourishes the soul.

Remember, true rejuvenation comes from embracing all these forms of rest. Prioritize self-care, find balance, and cultivate compassion for yourself. Share this post to spread the importance of rest! 🌿💤

Did you know that 🍋lemons🍋 are a highly alkaline fruit? 🍋Lemons are a staple of year-round detox that cleanses the liver and digestive tract, reduces water retention, and helps balance the body’s pH. 🍋Lemons are very high in antioxidant, collagen-building vitamin C, and the bioflavonoids in their pith(white membrane)strengthen blood vessels to prevent varicose veins.

🍋Lemons reduce inflammation in the body, while supporting immune function (thanks to all that vitamin C) and fighting off infections.
Lemon juice in water💦 is an excellent daily tonic for glowing skin, optimal, digestion, and detox. Lemon juice can help remedy indigestion, nausea, and heartburn, and it offers the added bonus of helping the body absorb plant-based iron.

🍋Lemons can boost flavor in a way similar to salt. Plus, it is rich in vitamin C and naturally detoxifying. Add lemon to salad dressings, sauces, grain salads, baked goods, soups, and stews. And don’t forget the zest, which adds another dimension of flavor as well as good- for-you-nutrients. Add lemon zest to oatmeal, smoothies, fruit, and vegetable salads, chicken and fish. You can also never go wrong with a cup of warm water with fresh lemon.
What are some of the ways that you use lemons? Please share in the comments below ⬇️
