A recent article published in the American Journal of Psychiatry offers a comprehensive update on the current landscape of TMS therapy and its clinical application. Titled “Treating Depression With Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Clinician’s Guide”, the paper outlines updated protocols, treatment outcomes, and important considerations for both providers and patients.

What Is TMS?

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. It’s an FDA-approved, non-invasive therapy used to treat depression—especially when medication hasn’t been effective. It works by using magnetic pulses to activate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. There’s no medication involved, no sedation, and no downtime.

When people hear about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), one of the most common questions is:“Isn’t that just shock therapy?”

The short answer is no. TMS is a safe, modern, and non-invasive treatment for depression that works in an entirely different way than Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), often referred to as shock therapy. While both treatments can be effective for certain mental health conditions, they are fundamentally different in how they work, the experience they provide, and their side effects.

At Southeastern Psychiatric Associates (SEPA), our TMS Center was the first to bring TMS to the South Shore area, and is built on decades of experience in mental health care. We have been serving the community for years, combining compassion with the latest advancements in science and treatment.

We are fortunate to be living in an era when we have more options at our disposal, when it starts to look like standard treatments for depression are not working.

Both ketamine and TMS offer dramatically different solutions from the old antidepressants and from each other.

WIth these two solutions, we can offer real hope that those who have not had good results in the past, can find a satisfying solution to this very debilitating illness.

TMS is not a medication at all, and therefore operates on very different principles. Fundamentally, it is the same physics as a cordless cell phone charger. But here we are not charging a battery, but rather making an important region of the brain more active and stronger.

As the days grow longer and nature begins to wake up, spring becomes a symbol of renewal and resilience. At Southeastern Psychiatric Associates’ TMS Center, we see the same kind of awakening in the brain through Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)—a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that increases neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to form new neural pathways.

Many individuals who have not responded well to antidepressants—or who prefer to avoid them altogether—are turning to TMS as a more natural option. TMS is thought to work by increasing neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to rewire itself, promoting healing from the inside out. This approach is especially appealing to those focused on integrative wellness, nervous system regulation, and long-term balance without pharmaceuticals.

For those seeking a natural, whole-person approach to mental health, spring offers more than just a season of renewal—it’s an opportunity to explore new paths to healing.
