Today is World Health Day! NYS Food Safety and Chemical Disclosure Act is a good start but it could be better. Did you know there are 147 forms of sodium in our food supply?!
The engineered types are used as flavor enhancers, preservatives, texturizes, to keep colors, etc. These are all added up under “sodium” on the nutrition label. Best to stick with a well sourced sea salt that, depending on the salt, has upwards of 90 different for our health. If you are concerned about iodine there are better forms to supplement with these days.
Check out the FDA link below for almost 4,000 additives in our foods and what their usage is. Search “sodium” to see the 147 listed.
The Substances Added to Food inventory replaces what was previously known as Everything Added to Foods in the United States (EAFUS).
