One principle that we talk about in keeping your bones healthy is Wolff’s Law. This law essentially says that your bones adapt to the stress you put them under. So if you want stronger bones, you need to train them just like you would a muscle. This is where weight training becomes so crucial as we age, in order to keep the bone strength we have, we need to put them under stress.

When our adrenal glands produce cortisol in such high amounts for a long period of time, eventually they slow down that production. This is a condition called Chronic Fatigue, or Adrenal Fatigue. When our body enters this state, it is difficult for us to wake up in the morning and have energy for the day, but then oftentimes have issues falling asleep and staying asleep.

Our hormones can become really unbalanced during periods of high stress. During these periods, our body overproduces a hormone called CORTISOL. When our body overproduces cortisol, it begins to steal from other hormones in the hormone tree, starting with progesterone, to DHEA, then eventually to testosterone. This depletion in progesterone is what causes brain fog, forgetfulness, and hot flashes.

High levels of cortisol can also affect the way our thyroid functions. In fact, most cases of hypothyroidism have nothing to do with the thyroid. When cortisol is produced in high amounts, it causes the production of a hormone called Reverse T3. This hormone prevents the conversion of T4 to T3 and decreases the efficacy of T3 on the body.

Another contributor to low testosterone is high cortisol levels for a long period of time, otherwise known as fight or flight. When the body is in fight or flight, the body produces high amounts of stress hormone, or cortisol. If our body can’t keep up with hormone production to make the amount of cortisol needed, the body is going to funnel ALL the hormones it’s making into cortisol, including testosterone!

Since hormones are made in the liver, the congestion is going to slow this process down, decreasing the total amount of hormone produced by the body. In addition to negatively impacting the liver, poor diets also promote the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. So not only do we have less hormone to begin with, but it’s not staying as testosterone either!

The #1 cause of low testosterone is a poor diet. Diets high in processed foods, added sugars, artificial sweeteners cause the liver to become congested, and if not addressed, fatty liver disease. It will also cause testosterone to be turned into estrogen at a faster rate!

Low testosterone and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is becoming a hot topic with podcasts talking about it and pharmaceutical commercials advertising it as well. While there are a few cases where the body actually does have issues with testosterone production like heavy metal toxicity or burn pits, it’s often a symptom of a deeper problem.
