The Pennington County DUI Court is a voluntary program, which includes regular appearances before the DUI Court judge, daily PBT testing and random drug testing, substance abuse counseling in individual and group settings, mental health counseling, educational classes, a system of behavior modification based on incentives and sanctions, and intense community supervision by the DUI Court Team. The Pennington County DUI Court requires participants to participate in community support groups and to be employed. The program length differs for each participant but is no less than a year.

Pennington County’s treatment court teams invite the public to join them in recognizing the remarkable accomplishments of participants completing the programs. As part of National Treatment Court Month, three Pennington County treatment courts will hold graduation ceremonies in May.

South Dakota Supreme Court Justice Janine M. Kern will be the featured speaker at the Pennington County DUI Court graduation on May 22. Linda Whittler, a treatment court graduate, will be the featured speaker at the Pennington County Drug Court graduation on May 28.

Treatment courts across South Dakota will hold special events in May to celebrate National Treatment Court Month.

Rather than continuing the revolving door of addiction and related crime, treatment courts lead people with substance use and mental health disorders out of the justice system and into lives of recovery, stability and health. South Dakota’s treatment courts have planned uplifting events to recognize individuals whose lives have been transformed by the treatment and support provided by these programs.
