Starting with a legal prescription can be a pathway to an addiction. The risk is especially great if the patient exceeds dosage and/or frequency recommendations.

Do your part to prevent addiction:
- Visit with your doctor about alternatives for pain management.
- Tell your doctor about risk factors you have for addiction.
- Ask your provider about risks of any medication recommended.
- Always follow the dosage and schedule as prescribed.
- Stop taking the medication as soon as you no longer need it.

Prevention works!

The Drug-Free Communities Act of 1997 was a turning point for prevention. Advocated for by CADCA and signed into law by President Clinton, this groundbreaking legislation redirected federal resources to community-based coalitions focused on reducing youth substance use.

By empowering local leaders to develop tailored prevention strategies, the DFC Act has proven that the most effective solutions come from the communities themselves. Nearly 30 years later, the power of prevention continues to grow, thanks to coalitions nationwide dedicated to building healthier, safer communities.

If your coalition is ready to expand its impact, apply for DFC funding here: cdc.gov/overdose-prevention/php/drug-free-communities/index.html

Why is it so hard to stop using substances? The answer lies in the science of how they affect our brain’s reward system. Substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic, treatable disease, and recovery takes support.

Let’s be clear: Medication safety is key to a healthier, safer home. Order a free lock box to safely store medications, or request free DisposeRx packets to dispose of medications at home. It’s a small act that can make a big difference in preventing substance misuse or accidental poisoning.

Individuals may order a lock box or packets for their homes. Organizations can order multiple lock boxes (up to 7) at a time to distribute to South Dakota residents, patients or families. Distribution documentation will be required.

Go to https://letsbeclearsd.com/prevention/medication-lockboxes to request yours!

Parents, have you talked to your teens about the dangers of prescription medications? Here’s how to start:

👉 Discuss the risks of misuse & the importance of safe use
👉 Voice any concerns with your teen’s doctor
👉 Safeguard all medications at home

You’d be surprised how hard it is to tell the difference between counterfeit pills and the real deal. Even if they are real, doesn’t mean they are safe. Learn to play it safe with opioids.

+ Only take pills prescribed to you.
+ Follow all dosage and timing recommendations by your provider.
+ Only fill your prescriptions at a reputable local pharmacy, not online.
+ Never share or take medication from someone else.

The safest thing is to only take medications exactly as prescribed by your medical provider.

Talk to your doctor about the risks of any medication you are prescribed.

If the prescribed dose isn’t working for you, ask your provider before making any adjustments. They may recommend a different medication or other strategies.

Never mix drugs or alcohol with your medication and make sure your physician knows about any other medications you may be taking.
