Established in 1983, The Black Hills Regional Eye Institute, located in Rapid City, South Dakota, provides a variety of leading eye care services to thousands of patients. Although located in a rural area, the Eye Institute consists of several physicians whose knowledge and experience provides the five-state region with outstanding eye care for children and adults.
The Black Hills Regional Eye Institute prides itself in providing the best in diagnosis, treatment, consultation, surgery, research, and education. This forty-five-thousand square-foot facility houses a world-class retina center, state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center, and laser and refractive center. The Eye Institute is also home to a low vision center for patients with diminished vision and an optical shop.
The Black Hills Regional Eye Surgery Center provides same-day surgery on an outpatient basis. Their staff includes registered nurses and certified registered nurse anesthetists who specialize in ophthalmology only. Surgeries performed at the Eye Surgery Center include retinal, cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastic, anterior segment and corneal transplants. The doctors at the Eye Institute use a comprehensive approach to eye care. Dr. Prema Abraham, Medical Director of the Eye Institute, provides services that normally would only be found in major metropolitan areas. She is the recipient of the “Best Doctors in America” award for the past decade and is the only physician in the region who dedicates her practice solely to the evaluation and management of vitreoretinal and macular disease and surgery. Dr. Abraham is one of the country’s leading principal investigators in retina clinical research in the areas of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retina vascular occlusive disease. The Retina Center offers the latest state-of-the-art technology for the diagnosis and management of retinal conditions.
Dr. Stephen Khachikian specializes in all forms of corneal transplantation and regularly performs refractive and cataract surgery including the use of toric and multifocal intraocular lenses.
