What Is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)?
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic condition characterized by intense and long-lasting pain, typically in one limb. It often develops after an injury, surgery, or even a stroke, although the exact cause remains unclear.
The hallmark symptom of CRPS is burning pain that is often out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury. This pain can be accompanied by swelling, changes in skin temperature and color, and stiffness in the affected limb. These symptoms can significantly impair movement and daily activities.
