Dr. Scovel’s work with the APA Executive Rural Health committee, as a member of the Council of Representatives, has been recognized with the APA Presidential Award. This project focuses on advocacy for frontier communities and Rural Behavioral Health, aiming to strengthen communities, improve Behavioral Health, alleviate workforce shortages, social isolation, and infrastructure challenges. The unanimous passage of the bill in Apa government highlights the importance strengthening our Rural communities mental health.

Daylight Saving Time begins tomorrow Sunday, March 8th. Clocks spring forward one hour.

Losing an hour of sleep might seem small, but it can throw off your mood, focus, and energy for a few days. If you notice yourself feeling a little off this week, that's normal.

A few things that help: get outside in the morning light, keep your bedtime consistent, and give yourself some grace while your body adjusts.

Take care of yourself this week. ❤️

One of the most common reasons people delay reaching out is the belief that their situation isn't "bad enough" for therapy.

But therapy isn't only for emergencies. Some of the most meaningful work happens when you're functioning but stuck. When something feels off but you can't name it. When you want to grow, not just survive.

If you've been thinking about it, that's reason enough. 605-721-8822

"Therapy takes years to work"

Some people avoid therapy because they assume it's a years-long commitment. But that's not how it works for most people.

Therapy length depends on your goals. Some people come for a few months to work through a specific challenge. Others check in periodically, like a mental health tune-up.

You're in the driver's seat. Your therapist is just the guide.

When everything feels overwhelming, zoom in.

You don't have to solve the whole problem today. You just have to take the next step.

One email. One conversation. One task crossed off the list.

Progress is progress.. even when it doesn't feel like it.

Good communication isn't about never fighting. It's about how you fight.

Healthy patterns sound like:
"I feel hurt when..." instead of "You always..."
"Can we take a break and come back to this?" instead of shutting down.
"Help me understand your side" instead of defending your own.

Small, powerful conversations can mean a big difference. ❤️

Not sure if therapy is for you? Here are a few signs it might be time:

You feel stuck, even when things look fine on the outside.
The same thoughts or worries keep cycling through your head.
You're more irritable, tired, or disconnected than usual.
You're avoiding things that used to matter to you.
You're coping in ways that aren't really helping.

You don't have to hit rock bottom to reach out. Feeling "off" is reason enough.

Today I had the privilege of co-authoring my first NBI Bill for the American Psychological Association (APA) Council of Representatives, the organization's governing body in Washington DC. The bill, focusing on Prioritizing Rural Mental Health, received overwhelming approval from the governing body of the APA. As a representative of the South Dakota Psychological Association and member of the Rural Health executive committee, this initiative is close to my heart ❤️. Following three years of service on the Council, I hope to continue contributing for another three-year term.
