Western Pennsylvania is home to many small towns created from the oil boom in the late 1800's. Considered by many to be the center of the lower oil region, Petrolia was born when the “Fanny Jane” well was struck on April 1st of 1872. The oil industry in the region was in decline by 1879 and population went from 1,100 in 1880 to less than 200 today.
