🌿If you’ve strolled through Fresh at Five in Clinton, chances are you’ve admired the diverse selection of plants from Artillery Ridge Growers. Behind the lush display is longtime grower Mike Holcombe, who has been sharing his green thumb with Mississippi for over 30 years.
What began as a hobby quickly grew into something bigger. “I just had too many plants not to share,” Mike recalls. A native of Ellisville, he moved to Raymond in the mid-1980s after stints in Jackson and service in the Navy Reserve, including deployment in the Gulf War. Mike also retired from the Mississippi Department of Health as Director of the Tuberculosis and Refugee Health Programs and volunteered with the Boy Scouts for 25 years. His academic roots run deep with degrees from both USM and Mississippi State.
Mike’s love of plants is rooted in childhood memories of his grandfather’s farm and flower garden. Today, he specializes in “old-timey” plants, perennials, native varieties, and unique finds. He has a large hosta collection and hybridizes daylilies, especially double and repeat bloomers. His market booth often includes hardy hibiscus with 10” blooms, fruit trees, herbs, pollinators, and curiosities like the color-changing "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" plant.
You’ll find Mike on Saturdays at the Mississippi Farmers Market in Jackson, at Fresh at Five on Tuesday evenings during the summer, and at the Raymond Country Fair. He also pops up at other local markets, with updates on his Artillery Ridge Growers page. For special orders or questions, message him on Facebook or text (601) 500-0392.
Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just getting started, Mike’s plants, and his knowledge, are a treasured part of the market community.
