Surveys completed in the Rio Grande Valley show that up to 14.1% of the adult population suffers from depression. Broader regional assessments show nearly half (48.8%) of RGV Latinx residents screened positive for depression and 50.2% for anxiety.
In the RGV, 1 of every 3 children and youth struggle with mental health needs, with depression and anxiety being the most common issue. Across the state, an estimated 314,000 Texas youths aged 12-17 have depression.
Statewide, over 43% of Texas adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depression. In South Texas, women, individuals with disabilities, and the unemployed report are at a higher risk for depression.
A contributing factor in our predominantly Hispanic community in the RGV, stigma and cultural mindsets- not giving mental health the attention it deserve or dismissing it altogether, are a major obstacle preventing individuals from getting the professional help they need.
