April 30 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Play Is Powerful Learning

Play is one of the most important ways children learn about the world around them. Through play, children practice communication, problem-solving, creativity, social interaction, and emotional regulation.

For children with autism, play can also be a meaningful way to build skills in a natural and engaging environment. Activities like pretend play, building, turn-taking games, and shared activities help support language development, social connection, and flexible thinking.

When learning is fun and motivating, children are often more engaged and open to trying new things.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we use play as a powerful tool to support growth, learning, and connection with the children we serve.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is a play activity you’ve seen help a child learn or practice a new skill?

Today’s Topic: Independence Grows Through Support

Independence doesn’t happen all at once—it develops over time with guidance, support, and opportunities to practice new skills. Children learn best when they are given the right level of support while being encouraged to try things on their own.

Support might include modeling skills, breaking tasks into smaller steps, providing prompts, or offering encouragement as children learn and build confidence.

As children gain experience and success, those supports can gradually fade, allowing them to become more confident and independent in their daily lives.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we believe that the right support today helps build the independence children will carry into tomorrow.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is one skill you’ve seen a child become more independent with over time?

April 28 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Growth Happens in Safe Places

Children learn and grow best in environments where they feel safe, supported, and understood. When a child feels secure, they are more willing to try new things, take risks in learning, and build new skills.

Safety doesn’t just mean physical safety—it also means emotional safety. Children thrive when they know they will be met with patience, encouragement, and understanding, even when they make mistakes or struggle with a task.

Creating supportive environments helps children build confidence, resilience, and trust, all of which are essential for learning and development.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we work to create spaces where children feel comfortable being themselves while building the skills they need to grow.

💙 Discussion Question:
What are some ways we can create environments where children feel safe to learn and grow?

Today’s Topic: Different Does Not Mean Less

Every individual with autism experiences the world in their own unique way. Differences in communication, learning, social interaction, or sensory experiences do not make someone less capable, less valuable, or less deserving of opportunity.

Being different simply means that individuals may think, learn, and engage with the world in ways that are not always typical—but those differences can also bring unique perspectives, strengths, and abilities.

When we embrace differences and focus on understanding, we create environments where individuals feel accepted, respected, and supported.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we believe that every child deserves to be seen for their strengths, supported in their challenges, and valued for exactly who they are.

💙 Discussion Question:
How can we help promote acceptance and appreciation for differences in our communities?

Today’s Topic: Celebrate Who They Are Today

While it’s important to support growth and development, it’s equally important to celebrate children for who they are right now. Every child has their own personality, interests, strengths, and unique ways of experiencing the world.

Focusing only on future goals can sometimes make us overlook the joy, progress, and individuality present today. Taking time to appreciate each child’s quirks, laughter, interests, and achievements—no matter how small—helps build confidence and connection.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we believe in supporting growth while also celebrating each child for the wonderful individual they are today.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is something unique or special about a child you work with that makes you smile? 😊

This past weekend, our entire team came together for an in-service training focused on continuing education and growth 💚

We are so proud of our student analysts who helped lead presentations on important topics, including assent and assent withdrawal, prompting and error correction, and staff burnout. These conversations are essential to ensuring we are providing ethical, effective, and compassionate care to the children and families we serve.

Our team walked away with valuable tools and strategies that will directly support our therapy sessions and strengthen the care we provide every day.

In addition, we had 4 staff members complete Safety Care training this week, continuing our commitment to maintaining a safe, supportive environment for both our clients and our team.

We are always learning, always growing, and always striving to be better, for our kids, our families, and each other. 💚👏💙

Today’s Topic: Your Child’s Future Is Not Defined by Today

A child’s development is a journey, and where they are today does not determine where they will be tomorrow. Growth happens over time, and many children continue to develop new skills, strengths, and independence as they learn and experience the world.

It’s easy to focus on current challenges, but it’s important to remember that progress can happen in many ways and at many different points in life. With support, opportunities, and encouragement, children can continue to grow far beyond what may seem possible in the moment.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we focus on building skills, confidence, and independence while supporting families every step of the way.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is one moment where you saw a child make progress that once seemed unlikely?

We might be a few days late… but the appreciation is right on time 💚💙

Wednesday was Administrative Professionals Day, and while we missed the calendar, we will NEVER miss recognizing the incredible people who keep Expressions running behind the scenes every single day.

✨ Regina, our Administrative Assistant, is truly the backbone of our day-to-day operations. From keeping everything organized, supporting staff and families, and making sure the clinic runs smoothly, she is our go-to for just about everything. She is reliable, detail-oriented, and such an important part of our team.

✨ Mace, our Administrative Assistant focused on medical billing, works tirelessly behind the scenes managing insurance, navigating claims, and serving as a liaison between our clinic and health insurances. His role is essential in making sure services continue seamlessly for our families, and we are so grateful for his dedication and precision.

From supporting our team and families to handling all of the behind-the-scenes details, these two do it all, and they do it so well.

Today we celebrate YOU. Thank you for everything you do for our team and our kids 💚👏

Today’s Topic: Celebrate Effort, Not Just Outcomes

Progress looks different for every child, and sometimes the biggest victories are found in the effort it takes to try. Learning new skills can take time, patience, and many small steps along the way.

Celebrating effort—such as trying a new activity, attempting to communicate, staying with a task longer, or practicing a difficult skill—helps build confidence and motivation.

When we recognize effort, children learn that their hard work and persistence matter, not just the final result.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we celebrate the small steps, the practice, and the determination it takes for children to grow and learn each day.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is a moment when you saw a child put in great effort, even if the outcome wasn’t perfect?

April 23 – Autism Awareness Month 💙

Today’s Topic: Predictability Reduces Anxiety

Many individuals with autism thrive when their environment is predictable and structured. Knowing what to expect throughout the day can help reduce uncertainty and make transitions feel less overwhelming.

Tools such as visual schedules, consistent routines, countdowns before transitions, and clear expectations can help children feel more prepared and confident in their environment.

When children understand what is coming next, it often leads to reduced anxiety, smoother transitions, and increased engagement in learning and activities.

At Expressions Behavioral Healthcare, we use structure and predictability to help create environments where children feel safe, supported, and ready to succeed.

💙 Discussion Question:
What is one strategy you use to help make transitions or daily routines more predictable for a child?
