RELEASE THE QUAKERTOWN STUDENTS!
How does a peaceful protest end up like this? Public high school students have 1st amendment rights.
Quakertown High School students conducted an act of peaceful civil disobedience by walking out of school to protest ICE yesterday. Then they appear to have been aggressively assaulted by a man in plain clothes, later identified as the Chief of Police.
Yes, the school is responsible for student safety. An appropriate school response would be to enact the same discipline for students walking out in protest as they would for students walking out to get hoagies at Wawa. Any more than that is a violation of student civil liberties and freedom of political speech.
Yes, the police are responsible for public safety, and are within their jurisdiction to monitor and guide protesters away from the street. Any more than that is a violation of civil liberties and freedom of assembly.
We want answers to these questions:
• Did the man in plain clothes identify himself as law enforcement?
• On what grounds did he assault a group of peaceful students?
• Did the police make any attempt at deescalation?
• What are the arrested students charged with?
• Why are they still in detention over 24 hours later?
• When will they be released?
