Resident Spotlight: Nancy Kulp
A Life of Dedication, Hard Work, and Community Spirit
Nancy Kulp was born on November 10, 1942, in Douglasville, Pennsylvania to Irene & Elmer Moyer. Just a year later, her family moved to a farm in Oley Valley, where she was raised among dairy cows, chickens, and pigs. Nancy was one out of 5 children. All still living except a brother who passed away at age 55 from cancer.
Later, the family relocated to Exeter Township, continuing their farming lifestyle. Nancy attended St. Lawrence School in Exeter through the fourth grade, then transferred to Jacksonwald for fifth through seventh grade, and completed her education at Exeter High School. It was there she discovered her talent for typing—first on a manual typewriter, then moving on to electric models—eventually reaching an impressive speed of 80 to 90 words per minute.
After high school, Nancy began her career at American Casualty on Washington Street in Reading, where she worked for 3½ years. She then held a brief role at the Beryllium Company for six months, followed by 2½ years at General Battery in Muhlenberg Township. It was during her time at General Battery that she met her future husband, and the two were married on January 1, 1965. They had two sons: Duane, born in 1969, and William, born in 1975.
Though life took an unexpected turn when her husband left, Nancy persevered. She joined the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (now part of the Department of Human Services), working at the Cherry Street office in Reading. Hired as a typist, she steadily climbed the ranks to become a clerical supervisor. Her dedication and work ethic earned her numerous awards, including several perfect attendance plaques and a special commendation for 15 years of outstanding service to the Commonwealth. She retired at the age of 64.
Outside of work, Nancy lived a rich and fulfilling life. She sang in her church choir, the County Chorus, and her high school chorus. She also ran a cleaning business, which her eldest son and his wife continue to operate today. Nancy generously gave her time to Fairview Christian School in Reading, volunteering in reading, computer support, and various other tasks. Her contributions to the school and her community reflect her caring spirit and willingness to help others.
Today, Nancy is a beloved resident at The Manor at Market Square, where she continues to share her talents and energy. She’s often found playing games and actively assisting the activities staff—especially with bingo, a community favorite. Her positive attitude, strong work ethic, and warm heart make her a valued and inspiring member of our community.
Thank you, Nancy, for being a shining example of resilience, service, and kindness. We are lucky to have you here!
