👣 Condition Spotlight

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries we see and they can happen to anyone, whether from sports, uneven ground, or a simple misstep. A sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or torn, leading to pain, swelling, bruising, and instability.

While many people try to “walk it off,” untreated ankle sprains can lead to chronic pain, weakness, and repeated injuries. Early evaluation and proper treatment are key to healing correctly and preventing long-term issues.

✅ Signs you should get checked:
• Persistent pain or swelling
• Difficulty bearing weight
• Bruising or instability
• Repeated ankle sprains

Treatment may include bracing, physical therapy, supportive footwear, and guided rehabilitation to restore strength and mobility.

If you’ve recently injured your ankle or have ongoing pain from a past sprain, don’t ignore it. Getting the right care can help you get back on your feet safely and confidently.

👣 Foot Fact Friday
Did you know your feet can reveal important clues about your overall health? Conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and circulation problems often show early warning signs in the feet before anywhere else in the body. Paying attention to changes such as swelling, numbness, color changes, or persistent pain can help catch these issues early.

Regular foot exams, both at home and with a healthcare professional, are an essential part of maintaining long-term wellness. Taking care of your feet isn’t just about comfort, it’s about supporting your overall health from the ground up.

👣 Condition Spotlight: Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction

Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction occurs when the tendon that supports the arch becomes inflamed or weakened. Over time, this can lead to progressive flattening of the foot and ankle instability.

Common symptoms include:
• Pain or swelling along the inside of the ankle
• Flattening of the arch
• Fatigue with walking or standing
• Ankle instability or rolling inward

Early diagnosis is key. Conservative treatment may help relieve symptoms and prevent progression, while advanced cases may require more specialized care. In some cases, surgery may be needed if there is a delay in diagnosis and treatment

Foot Fact Friday 👣

Toenails grow about four times slower than fingernails.
This slower growth is due to decreased blood flow and less frequent stimulation compared to the hands.

Because of this, toenail injuries, discoloration, and fungal infections can take much longer to fully grow out. If you notice persistent changes in your toenails, it’s important to have them evaluated rather than waiting for them to “grow out on their own.”

📍 Healthy nails start with healthy feet.

Low-Dye strapping is a specialized taping technique commonly used in podiatry to help support the arch and control excessive foot motion.

Why is Low-Dye strapping used?
• Helps reduce strain on the plantar fascia
• Improves foot alignment during walking and standing
• Decreases pain caused by overpronation
• Provides short-term support while healing occurs

Who can benefit?
Low-Dye strapping is often recommended for patients with:
• Plantar fasciitis
• Flat feet or collapsing arches
• Heel pain
• Overuse injuries related to foot mechanics

This technique can be especially helpful as a temporary support, during flare-ups, or while transitioning into custom orthotics or other long-term treatments.

📍 If you’re experiencing ongoing foot or heel pain, our team at Reading Foot & Ankle Specialists can help determine if Low-Dye strapping is right for you.

Foot Fact Friday 👣

Your foot size can change as you age.

Over time, ligaments naturally loosen and the arches may flatten. These changes can cause the feet to become longer and wider even in adulthood. That’s why shoes that once fit well may feel tight or uncomfortable years later.

📌 Tip: Have your feet measured periodically and wear properly fitted, supportive footwear to help reduce strain, pain, and the risk of injury.

Winter conditions can be tough on your feet. Cold temperatures, slippery surfaces, and unsupportive footwear can all contribute to foot and ankle discomfort. Choosing supportive, well-fitting shoes or boots with proper traction and arch support can help reduce the risk of slips, strain, and overuse injuries.

If you’re experiencing foot pain, fatigue, or instability during the winter months, your footwear may be playing a larger role than you realize. A podiatric evaluation can help identify whether your shoes are providing the support your feet need.
