During a “Nature Tots” hike yesterday I told “S” that Sprout loved to chew on sticks. She handed me the long stick she was carrying and asked me to take it home for him. Later on “L” who is very shy and never spoke to me came up and handed me another stick. His mom said he wanted to give me the stick because he overheard Sprout liked chewing on them. My hikers are awesome at every age.

The other day I decided to take advantage of the warm weather for a paddle. I was supposed to ride the tide out to the beach, wait for it to switch and then ride the tide back in. Unfortunately I foolishly forgot the check the winds being that it was so calm by my house. Big mistake. My ride back was a tough paddle and any benefit of the tide was more than negated by the high persistent winds. I always talk about checking the weather, winds and tides whenever going out paddling so I got what I deserved for not taking my own advice.

I’m a firm believer in volunteering with things that align with your ideologies. With many NPS employees furloughed I felt it was more important than usual to get out and ride the Hook yesterday. Spoke with some employees that came in anyway to “volunteer” which really meant doing their job for free. Hopefully they’ll all be back to work soon.
