🌸Notes from an Herbalist: 🌸

Monarda Fistulosa (Bee Balm) is re-emerging in our native landscapes and in the pots at your favorite native plant nursery!

Though not displaying is soft pink, explosive blooms, it’s peppery spirit is on display in its toothy foliage.

Spring is consider a “damp” time in many traditional systems of medicine. It’s rainy, humid and fluctuates considerably in temperature (as we’ve been seeing!) It’s hard for our bodies to adjust to the shift of the seasons amongst the variability.

People often find themselves prone to viral infections- achey, arthritic conditions act up, mood can be dreary, digestive bog sets in.

Bee balm is considering a pungent, warming & drying herb- bringing some balance to this erratic winter to spring & spring to summer transition! It will bring circulation to achey joints, bring movement to slow digestion & acts as a antiviral to aid a sluggish immune response while clearing the sinuses and lungs of wet mucus. It makes a delish, oregano-esque tea or invigorating & clearing addition to a nasal steam.

In a landscape it is a stalky, upright perennial flower that blooms in mid to late summer and will spread via rhizome year after year. It prefers full to part sun areas in moist soil. An attractive and true favorite of pollinators and hummingbirds 🐝

It bears the edges, transitionary spaces between wet meadows and forests-two very different landscapes and sets of conditions- just like it does for us in springtime! 🌷🌧
