Guruji described feet as “where all the power is”. With 26 bones and countless articulations, each foot influences the knees, hips, core, the health of our spine and even how we breathe.

In this special series with Jessica Becker, we will explore families of asanas through the lens of our feet to awaken these connections and bring new strength and awareness into our asanas.

Excited to offer my fifth annual 5 day “ Light on Yoga “ intensive beginning tomorrow.

Monday January 5 to Friday January 9th.
8.30-10.30am EST ( online).

We will begin at week 5 and follow BKS Iyengar’s sequences woven with a study of the yamas and niyamas.

“ asanas ( postures) bring steadiness, health and lightness of limb…mental equilibrium and prevents fickleness of mind…asanas have evolved over the centuries so as to exercise every muscle, nerve and gland in the body.

Where does the body end and the mind begin? Where does the mind end and the body begin? They cannot be divided as they are interrelated and but different aspects of the same all pervading divine consciousness”
BKS Iyengar. Light on Yoga.

I feel New Year’s Day brings with it a powerful presence of now where the veil of what actually is, juxtaposed with the stories I tell myself becomes very thin, and the possibilities that reside in this special place of not knowing become very clear.

So happy new year … in this new space of possibilities, not least that this powerful presence is available in every moment of every day.

Ram Dass once said, “ I can do nothing for you but work on myself… you can do nothing for me but work on yourself.” 🙏💜🙏

“I came with an empty hand, I will go with an empty hand. Today the empire of yoga has grown by the grace of God and I have learnt also not to feel sorry if something happens. Time and circumstances played on me and I leave the future also to time. The new things, new visions which I introduced in yoga must not fade. Yoga is a growing subject and I'm sure that it is going to grow for several centuries to come. I may be called a legendary figure, which matters nil for me. But I like that these new introductions to this yoga does not die as I have blown the cosmic life into it. As life is dynamic, I've changed the static yoga into a dynamic yoga, and I hope that it will always be ascending with a geometric progression. I have got trained thousands of yoga teachers. Some teachers are not only direct pupils of mine but their pupils too have become yoga teachers. As all are my children, my greatgrandchildren who practice my method are also yoga teachers. Generations after generations are following it. You see here I have got students from four generations coming still. Even in London, if you make enquiries, there are three generations continuing since 1950s. Probably the quality of the blood, the genes, what we speak of today, I think my yoga has changed the quality of the genes in each individual who practises since years and I think, I feel that my method of yoga can never have an easy death. And that's why I'm happy.”

In honor of Guruji BKS Iyengar on the 107th anniversary of his birth

“ Fire in our practice important- every one of the ancient texts say that this fire is the stamina of practice. It is this discipline of practice that cultivates energy. It is this channeled energy that enables us to keep up the practice.
If Guruji did not have this fire, none of us would be here”.

In honor of Geetaji on this anniversary of her birthday.

Her question “ Why do you stop?”

Her comments:

“ stopping the mind is an impurity… you have to catch the purity step by step. Burn your impurities…. When the body stops, the mind stops, the intelligence stops, the consciousness stops. You need body awareness, mind awareness, consciousness awareness. When will you find the soul? The goal is the soul.

There is an emotional feeling to it. The feeling and sensitivity. Sensibility is important during the practice of yoga. The body is seen by us, the mind is seen by feeling. The soul cannot be seen.

You think yoga is for the soul. Why don’t you try to touch your soul. Then my job will be done.”

Notes of mine from Geetaji’s last classes in Pune at the 100th anniversary celebration of Guruji.

With deep and eternal gratitude Geetaji ❤️🙏❤️

It is with deep sorrow that Barbara Boris - my friend, colleague, and first Iyengar yoga teacher in the United States - passed away suddenly on Saturday evening. She was an indispensable guide and support in my studying and becoming certified in teaching Iyengar Yoga.

She was a devoted Iyengar Yogi and brought many to travel this path with her. She and I taught for one another for many years and she was a teacher at my studio in Rhinebeck.

Her last words on her last post “ see you on the other side “ 💔 have brought me to tears.

Sending love and light and gratitude dear Barbara, from all of us who were touched by your life, laughter, teaching, and good company.

Love and blessings as you continue on your journey

I will never forget Anna - a force of precision and determination. Her classes are still some of the hardest I have ever taken!! Her guidance in my teacher training and in classes were always helpful, with a stern voice, fierce at times, a watchful eye, quick wit, laughter and a lovely smile.

Rest in peace dear Anna ♥️🪷♥️

On Tuesday morning, we lost longtime faculty member, Anna Golfinopoulos, who was 95. A longtime resident of the Upper East Side, she retired from teaching at the Institute around 10 years ago. Her legacy is part of the fabric that our organization is made of and lives on in those of us who learned from her, and taught alongside her on faculty for many years. She was legendary.

She found Iyengar Yoga later in life, after serving for years as an art historian at the Guggenheim. An avid smoker for decades, Anna took up yoga as a way to combat her ni****ne addiction. After dabbling with different types of yoga, she became an ardent student of Suzie Hodges and later, Mary Dunn. Where Mary went, so did Anna, including to Pune, to study with the Iyengars.

Her powers of observation and keen insights lead to many transformative experiences for us as students. Passionate about our potential, she expressed aggravation by any perceived lack of involvement. Class with Anna meant that you were not going to be able to hide anywhere, and that you would definitely encounter her fierce, exacting nature, buffered by her wit and humor! She could genuinely see the possibilities, even when we could not.

Longtime students, Ajay Balakrishnan, and his wife, Indu were devoted students and largely responsible for helping handle Anna’s affairs in these final years. In his last visit with Anna, Ajay and faculty member Hugh Millard, found Anna in a great mood. After some banter, out of the blue, Anna declared, “You know what I am? I am an inspiration!”

We couldn’t agree more, dear Anna, may you rest in peace! You are sorely missed.

A wonderful retreat with an amazing group of yogis at Halstead Hill Yoga, Owego, New York.
Our theme was to study these words by BKS Iyengar:

“ In yoga there is one thing you should all know: the weakest part is the source of action”. The Tree of Yoga pg: 42.

Wow !!! This is a very powerful sentence and summarizes in a few words, many many books on this vast subject of yoga. This sentence tells us, clearly us to be aware in the moment to observe what is actually going on. Whether one is straightening one’s leg, giving up chocolate, or facing emotional pain … how I see the situation affects how it turns out.

“The weakest point is the source of action” is the moment at which I get to see myself in a difficult situation - the weakest point ( the chocolate is right there, in front of me 😳) and I can choose to act differently ( leave the chocolate and go for a walk instead 🪷).

Such gratitude to Guruji for these words, and to have this practice to know how to stand in front of these words and witness from where my perceptions arise.

An opportunity to be of service to the teachings of BKS Iyengar and Mary Dunn at yesterday’s shoulder workshop at Sheffield yoga.

Thank you to everyone who attended - so special to have some folks new to the area who also studied with Mary.

Two Mary quotes:

“ even-ness doesn’t mean the same as”…. A mantra for practice

And “ let the shoulder blades cascade down your back”.
