Payne's Produce

Payne's Produce Produce and Greenhouses - Putnam Co. Payne's Produce is a locally owned and operated greenhouse and produce business. Our hours depend on the season. Come see us!

Permanently closed.

It has always been a Putnam County business and was started over 50 years ago by Joe and Virgie Payne. It has now grown to numerous greenhouses and tens of acres of farming of various vegetables including sweet corn, tomatoes, squash, peppers, etc. We are located in the town of Winfield on Winfield Rd (the old Rt. 35) across from Fruth Pharmacy and Rocky Step Rd. During the spring our greenhouses

are full of flowers, potted plants, and garden plants and seeds. During the summer we grow a full crop of homegrown vegetables. Each fall we grow pumpkins, some amazing mums at great prices, and offer fall decorations. During the winter...we rest...and order for next year!

The senior citizen voucher program is back! Help qualifying seniors around you learn about this program.
Looks like the amount decreased this year due to a decrease in federal funding, but it’s still a free $30 for qualifying senior citizens to use on locally grown produce. Contact your local senior center to find out their distribution process.
In the comments we have included general requirements, income requirements, and a link to participating farm markets in every county.

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) vouchers are back! Starting June 2, all 55 counties will have vouchers, worth $30, at their county senior centers. Call your center to find when those vouchers will be available! For more info: https://agriculture.wv.gov/senior-farmers-market-nutrition-program-vouchers-now-available-in-west-virginia/

Hi! 👋 We might be retired from farming, but we still gotta eat, so…

🍓 ‘Tis the Season for Freezer Jam! 🍓

No canning skills? None needed!
We whipped these up in about 30 minutes this morning.

➡️ 1 quart of sweet strawberries makes 5 pints of jam.
All you need:
✔️ Fresh berries
✔️ 1 box of SureJell (or store-brand pectin)
✔️ Sugar (yep, quite a bit!)
✔️ Water
✔️ Freezer-safe containers or jars

It’s the easiest way to enjoy homemade jam for months.

There’s many recipes for freezer jam, but this is what we did…

Recipe:
2 cups crushed fresh strawberries (at least 1 qt)
3-4 cups of sugar (can do less if berries are sweet)
1 (1.75 oz) pack of dry pectin (SureJell)
3/4 cup water

Wash and remove tops from berries then crush.

Mix crushed berries with sugar in a bowl and let sit for 10 minutes.

Stir pectin and water in a small pan and bring to a boil for 1 minute.

Stir pectin into the berries and let sit for 3 minutes.

Pour mixture into containers, leaving about an inch at the top and secure lid.

Flip jars over on their tops and let sit on countertop for 24 hours and then freeze. (Flipping them is the old fashioned way of creating a vacuum seal.)

Enjoy! ❤️

We’re hanging up the keys to the tractor! Thank you for 57 AMAZING years!

After 57 wonderful years of growing and sharing fresh produce, flowers, plants, and friendships with our community, John has made the bittersweet decision to hang up the keys to the tractor and officially retire. While it’s difficult to close a business we all cherish so much, it’s time to do the other things we love.

What started as a small, backyard family endeavor by Joe and Virgie Payne blossomed into something far greater. But none of it would have been possible without you. Your dedication to shopping local and supporting our business year after year has been the root of our success, and we are endlessly grateful.

Though we are stepping away, we hope you continue to intentionally support the various local farmers and small businesses who keep our community thriving. (We *might* have a few special sales using the honor policy if John decides to grow pumpkins or a small crop of something when he gets bored.)

Thank you for 57 incredible years. It has been an honor to help fill your dinner tables, gardens, and flower beds for so long. Even more so, we are grateful for the friendships formed with so many of you.

Continue eating your veggies, growing beautiful things, and being good to those around you. Virgie would expect all of those things from her customers.

With heartfelt gratitude,
The Payne’s Produce Family ❤️

Edit:
P.S. The property and farm equipment are NOT for sale.

Update: Canning frozen tomatoes in January worked like a charm! I impressed myself! 🤣 And I’ll never boil tomatoes again to get the skin off! Frozen was so much easier!

Thoughts:
It took the tomatoes a long time to thaw and they were a weird consistency after losing a lot of their water in the thawing process. That made me skeptical, but I kept going. Everything else was exactly the same as it would have been if I had got them straight from the field. Freezing is the way to go!

Also, I received an electric canner as a gift, used it today, and I’m in instant love! So easy to use, and so clean!!! I didn’t have to mess with a water bath canner, it didn’t pop water all over my stovetop, I didn’t burn myself, it didn’t make my kitchen 110° (although that wouldn’t have been so bad today!🥶), it drains right into your sink afterward…well worth it if you’ve been thinking about getting one. The electric one is a bit expensive, but if you can a lot (or even a little), you deserve it! ❤️

Trial and error today! Froze a bushel of Roma tomatoes in August. Got 2 gallons of them out today to use to can pasta sauce. Ran them under hot water for a few seconds and the skin peeled right off with little to no effort. Let’s hope it works out! If so, I’ll never boil tomatoes again to get the skin off because this was too easy!
Have you done this? Any tips?
