I loved the Top Gun sequel, sheer nostalgia, but one thing has bothered me… where was Kelly McGillis, aka Charlie?

She was one of the main stars of the original - the female lead, and a great role model in her professional capacity - so why was she nowhere to be seen?

According to Kelly, she was never asked to be in the movie, not even for a quick cameo.
Kelly believes this is because she has ‘aged appropriately’.
She’s not mad - she is just realistic, she says.

Well I’m a bit mad.

Tom Cruise is 59

Val Kilmer (who has unfortunately been very unwell and so had his part written round the fact he can no longer speak), is 62

Kelly McGillis is 64

That’s a 3/5 year age gap - absolutely nothing.

Jennifer Connelly, the new love interest of Maverick, (who was wonderful in the new movie) is 51

Why are female actresses under so much pressure to remain young, when male actors may age however they like?

I want to see more women on screen ageing as they must.

Let’s abolish this whole concept of women ‘letting themselves go’ and start celebrating the female journey instead.

Kelly McGillis, in my humble opinion, is BEAUTIFUL and it shouldn’t matter anyway, I would have loved to have seen Charlie pop up in a professional capacity, as an older version of herself. Makes perfect sense to me.

I WANT to see that glorious self-acceptance on my screen, don’t you?
