Teaching Tuesday: Let’s Talk About Cupping Therapy
You may have seen the circular marks left behind after a cupping session and wondered what exactly cupping therapy is. While it may look intense, cupping is actually a gentle technique many people find incredibly relaxing and effective for muscle tension and recovery.
Cupping uses specialized cups placed on the skin to create suction. This suction helps lift the tissue, increase circulation, and decompress tight muscles and fascia. Many clients describe it as the opposite of deep tissue pressure — instead of pushing down into the muscle, the tissue is gently lifted upward.
People often enjoy cupping for:
• Tight shoulders and neck tension
• Back pain and stiffness
• Headaches and migraines
• Athletic recovery
• General muscle soreness
• Improved mobility and relaxation
And those marks?
They are not bruises. The discoloration is caused by increased circulation brought to the area and typically fades within a few days to a week depending on the person. Some people mark more easily than others, and darker marks do not necessarily mean anything is “wrong.”
Cupping can be used alone or incorporated into a massage session depending on your goals and comfort level. The pressure is always adjustable, and communication during the session is important to make sure the treatment feels therapeutic and relaxing.
