📍 🧭 Your neck contains sensors that serve as your 'internal GPS,' informing your brain of your head's position. With forward head posture, these sensors lose accuracy, leading to a 2-degree error in head repositioning with eyes closed. This loss of accurate body position information can cause feelings of clumsiness or being 'off' even without pain. Chiropractic adjustments and exercises recalibrate these sensors, restoring accurate brain tracking.

👀 👂 Your eyes, inner ear, and neck sensors collaborate to track moving objects. People with forward head posture performed significantly worse. This can lead to issues like trouble reading in cars, dizziness with head turns, or visual strain at computers. These are interconnected problems resulting from disrupted coordination between your visual system and neck sensors.

Your head weighs 10-12 pounds, and when aligned correctly over your shoulders, your body maintains balance efficiently. However, if your head shifts forward, your brain receives distorted spatial information. Research shows that individuals with forward head posture have 30% worse balance scores. Correcting posture is crucial for proper nervous system function and safe movement.

The brainstem controls automatic functions like heart rate, digestion, and stress response. 🧠 Chronic forward head posture creates tension on neck structures, triggering an overactive 'fight or flight' response. 💥 🌪️ This can lead to trouble sleeping, anxiety, digestive issues, or difficulty relaxing. ⚠️ Your body remains in a stressed state due to mechanical tension from poor posture. Correcting head position helps restore nervous system balance, improving overall health and well-being.

Happy shoveling season! Be attentive to your posture habits during the winter months. If your muscles are too tense and tight from your indoor habits, you're more likely to have upper back and neck pain after shoveling snow.

What can we recommend to protect against disc and joint degeneration?

Firstly, glucosamine and chondroitin. Glucosamine is a major building block of cartilage. Within joints, the ends of the bones are covered in cartilage for protection, and this cartilage is more than 50% collagen protein. Glucosamine stimulates production of collagen and protects collagen from breaking down.

Chondroitin helps to keep cartilage hydrated. This is specifically useful for supporting the meniscus of the knees and the spinal discs. When cartilage is well-hydrated, it’s a better shock absorber. Chondroitin sulfate has been shown to be more effective in supplement form than as an injection!

We recommend the Ultimate Joint Repair formula, which contains glucosamine, chrondroitin, and natural herbal anti-inflammatory substances like turmeric, ginger, and essential omega-3 fatty acids.

Secondly, hydration is critical for patients with degenerative spinal discs, because the disc is more than 80% water!

And, of course, frequent movement!

Many people think chiropractic care is just about back pain, but we now understand it can impact how your whole nervous system functions, including your stress response, immune system, and even your sleep. When we correct subluxations, we’re not just helping a joint move better—we’re restoring proper communication between your brain and body. That helps your body adapt, which is key to staying healthy in the long run. Here are some of the lesser-known (but very cool) benefits of chiropractic care:

🧠 We’re not just working on joints; we’re helping your brain better regulate your immune response, too.
💓 Higher HRV (heart rate variability) after adjustments tells us your nervous system is more adaptable—able to shift between stress and recovery more effectively.
💪 Adjustments may help regulate stress hormones, depending on what your body needs, helping you adapt more efficiently.
🩺 Correcting subluxations, especially in the upper neck, may help normalize blood pressure in some patients, especially those not on meds.

In this paper we synthesize an expansive body of literature examining the multifaceted influence of chiropractic care on processes within and modulators of the neuroendocrine-immune (NEI) system, for the purpose of generating an inductive hypothesis regarding the potential impacts of chiropractic ca...

The most recent candy season (🎃Halloween🎃) is behind us. If you’re like our household, there is plenty of extra candy because you’d never want to run out and disappoint the trick-or-treaters! But, our immune systems have a few extra challenges over the next few months:

🌥 Less sunlight means less vitamin D, which can compromise immune strength.
⛳️ We may be less active in fall and winter, which makes our stress hormones rise – another imbalance that dampens our immune system.
🥧 Sugar creates inflammation, which works against our immune system.

Here are some ideas to reduce sugar intake:

1. Stevia-flavored drinks: We like Zevia, which is carbonated and comes in about a dozen flavors. Creamy root beer and cherry cola are pretty good. Also, Bai coconut water drinks. You can find both products in Red Wing, and Costco is a good source as well.

2. Skinny Dipped brand dark chocolate peanut butter cups. Oh My-Lanta, these are divine! Another Costco find.

3. Sugar cravings often mean we’re low in minerals like magnesium and zinc. These are easy to supplement with and available at major retailers. Read the label, and make sure it says “chelate,” “glycinate,” but not oxide. A higher-quality supplement will get broken down in your stomach and absorbed better. Nuts are also a good source of these minerals.

Immune boost from chiropractic:

Research shows that when we adjust your upper neck, we’re not just helping with pain and stiffness, we’re giving your immune system an immediate boost. This helps explain why many of our patients notice they don’t get sick as often. The effect is temporary, which is why we recommend regular care to maintain these immune benefits. The immune boost peaks about 30 minutes after your adjustment and gradually returns to baseline over two weeks.

We have learned over the past 25 years that your body has a neuroendocrine-immune (NEI) supersystem that runs on constant internal communications [neuroendocrine means nervous system + hormonal system]. One goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to support clear and well-regulated communications, like a computer’s operating system. This is one reason that our care plans for wellness include an adjustment every few weeks.

Our preliminary findings demonstrate an immediate, temporary increase in SIgA levels after a UCAT treatment at the CCJ.
