My visit to UCSF on Monday marked 15 years of TrialNet study visits. 15 YEARS! I think the total visits is now at 42. And yes, they take that much blood on each visit.

This is how we find better ways to treat type 1 diabetes. We must get involved and do our part. I am not doing this for myself, I am doing this for the future generations so that they can have a better life.

TrialNet will be attending our Srides walk on November 8th at the Sundial Bridge from 10AM until noon to raise awareness of diabetes.

If you are type 1 or are related to a type 1 please come out and talk to the TrialNet folks and see if you can be screened. They will be providing screening that day. This is a big deal, and we all need to do our part.

There are a multitude of different studies. Don't let my 15 years scare you.

Please look at the attached flyer. See you all soon.

Tim

Thank you everyone for your understanding!

Medical-Related Absences & Monitoring🤕

The student will not be penalized for any absences related to their diabetes.
If affected by high or low blood glucose levels and needing a break, they have access to the water fountain, bathroom, ketone monitor, and snacks to treat hypo- or hyperglycemia.
Any time the student doesn’t feel well, they’re permitted to monitor their glucose and take necessary actions.

Classroom Time & Academic Work📝

The student is permitted extra time to finish classroom work and tests without penalty.
They shall be given additional instruction and time to make up any missed classroom time due to diabetes care, without penalty.
If their blood glucose affects their ability to take a test, they may pause and reschedule as needed.

Staff Training & Coordination👩‍🏫

At least two staff members in the building shall be properly trained in diabetes care, including testing, glucagon administration, site changes, insulin dosing, understanding glucose levels, insulin administration, carb counting, and ratios.
The nurse and school staff will coordinate the student’s meal and snack schedules.

Meals, Snacks, and Self-Management🥨🧃

The student shall eat lunch at the same time every day—or earlier if needed due to hypoglycemia. They will have sufficient time to finish lunch without rushing.
A snack and a fast-acting glucose source must be available to the student at all times.
The student may eat snacks in the classroom.
Parents will provide snacks to be stored in all relevant rooms.

Emergency Drills 🚨

In emergency drills, designated staff are responsible for retrieving these snacks.

Physical Activity & Safety🏋️‍♂️

The student may not exercise if they have hyperglycemia with moderate to large ketones. They may not exeise if their blood sugars go below ____ and their hypoglycemic episodre will be treated before participating in phicical activity. Teachers or supervising staff should also have fast-acting sugar available during physical activities. Since exercise may trigger hypoglycemia, proper precautions like monitoring and glucagon need to be available.

Bathroom & Hydration Access🚽💧

The student shall have immediate and unrestricted access to the bathroom and water at all times. Bathroom use should be unlimited and without penalty.

Supervision & Emergency Response🏥🚑

If the student displays signs of hypo- or hyperglycemia, they will be escorted to the office by staff or designated person.

Bus/transportation 🚌

The student shall have someone trained in diabetes care present on the bus at all times.

Cellphone/watch📱⌚️

The student should have access to their cell phone and watch at all times during the school day for monitoring purposes.

Field Trips & Off-Site Events🚙🚌

Parents may choose to drive separately to any school function (e.g., field trips) and attend. If a parent is not present, the school must provide a trained medical designee to accompany the student—without requiring the parent to serve as a chaperone.

📓📝I hope that the 2025-2026 school year is the best year yet! 📌✏️🍎
