We are here to say it loud and clear: 👏eating disorders don’t happen because someone wants to be thin or “beautiful” 👏 They are complex mental illnesses rooted in biological, psychological, physiological, and social risk factors. Don’t get us wrong: diet culture and the thin ideal makes people much more vulnerable to developing an eating disorder, but it’s reductive to simplify a complex brain disorder to the desire to look a certain way.
And let’s move away once and for all from the harmful stereotype that these deadly diseases just happen to white thin girls. Eating disorders affect people across gender, body size, race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status equally (and sometimes at higher rates in certain populations!)
Once we can agree on this truth, we will be able to get more people suffering the care they need for this complex diagnosis—and show them a path to hope and healing 🤍
