A brand new UK national security assessment warned that global biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse are no longer just environmental concerns, they are direct threats to food security, economic stability, and global safety. The report states that every major ecosystem on Earth is degrading, and some could begin collapsing 🔜 as early as 2030 ◀️
These collapses would permanently damage the systems that produce food, regulate weather, and supply clean water; triggering higher food prices, shortages, conflict, migration, and increased disease risk worldwide.
The report is blunt about food systems being at the center of this crisis. Large-scale food production is identified as the single BIGGEST driver of biodiversity loss, and current global diets require more land, water, fertilizer, and imported inputs than ecosystems can sustain.
When ecosystems fail, food production drops, countries compete for remaining resources, and nations that rely heavily on imports, like the UK, become especially vulnerable to rising prices and disrupted supply chains.
From a food security perspective, this makes plant-based diets a practical realistic response, not some "lifestyle trend." Producing food directly for people, like beans, lentils, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits, requires far fewer resources than feeding crops to animals first. (We currently slaughter apx 92,000,000,000 land animals a year to feed a human population of just 8.1 billion)
In a world facing ecological limits, plant-based food systems can feed more people using less land and water, while reducing pressure on forests, freshwater systems, and soils that are already desperately nearing collapse.
The report’s conclusion is clear, protecting ecosystems and changing how we produce food is cheaper, faster, and more reliable than trying to fix the damage after collapse occurs.
