“I held a party the other week and grief came.
She wasn’t invited but she came anyway - barged her way in through the door and settled down like she was here to stay.
And then she introduced me to the friends she’d brought with her - Anger. Fear. Frustration. Guilt. Hopelessness.
And they sang in the loudest voices, took up space in every corner of the room and spoke over anyone else that tried to talk.
They made it messy and loud and uncomfortable.
But finally, they left.
And long afterwards, when I was all alone,
I realised there was still someone here.
Quietly clearing up after the rest.
I asked who she was and she told me, “Love.”
And I assumed that’s why she looked familiar - because I had met her before.
“Or perhaps,” she said, “it’s because I’ve been here the whole time.”
And I was confused then because I hadn’t seen her all evening.
But when I looked more closely,
when I looked into her eyes,
I realised quietly that she had been here.
All the time.
She’d just been dressed as grief.”

Sometimes it helps to remember that underneath our grief, there is love. It was there before, it’s there now and it will still be there afterwards.
I share this poem a lot because I think it encapsulates that idea of grief simply being love in disguise ❤

I’m sharing this in hopes of saving a life:

This morning I took a bite of a hard boiled egg. Something happened that made me take a quick inhale of breath and the bite sucked down my windpipe. Before I knew it I was choking and couldn’t breathe. It was SUPER QUICK!! Within a couple minutes, I was down and rapidly going out.

I got Randy’s attention in the other room and he came running. He was going to do the HEIMLICH maneuver on me and my first thought was, “He’s a moose. He will break my ribs.” I frantically pointed to the kitchen cabinet that holds the ANTI CHOKING DEVICE. Randy grabbed it and was able to suck the bite of egg out of my windpipe.

If I had to drag myself to the cabinet ( I would NEVER GIVE UP) it was a good thing that the anti-choking device was on a low shelf and I could have reached it from crawling on the floor. (Upright quickly became impossible.) If I stored it in another room or high up, I wouldn’t have been able to get it.

I keep a fire blanket (the front half of my house burned down when I was 12-years-old from a kitchen fire) and the anti-choking device in my kitchen. Either or both could save you or a loved one. We experienced that this morning.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING… SAY SOMETHING…

I have been thinking hard about this issue and made a careful decision to discuss this concern. As a psychologist with 35+ years in the profession and an expert witness in s*xual mo**st, r**e and assault, I am very worried about an issue that I have noticed is increasing dramatically.

There are many young girls, most appear to be about 13 to late teens and early 20’s, who are dressing in extremely short, shorts, crop tops (midriff showing), sometimes also low cut (cleavage exposed) and coming from school. With the current HUGE concerns about s*x trafficking and vulnerability of our young women (and boys), this trend worries me a lot.

As a mom I’m thinking WHERE ARE THEIR PARENTS??? Why aren’t they saying HELL NO YOU AREN’T GOING TO SCHOOL LIKE THAT. You can wear that outfit to the lake or somewhere a bathing suit would be okay. WHERE ARE THE HIGH SCHOOL DRESS CODES???? How is this allowed? How is this conducive to an effective learning environment?

Is anyone else concerned about this? Parents are you battling with your young girls to keep them safe and appropriate? I am not a prude, but this seems so far OUT OF HAND that I am amazed, blown away and worried about these young girls’ safety.

DO HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE A DRESS CODE? If so, can they… do they.. enforce it? IS ANYONE ELSE WORRIED ABOUT THIS TREND???
