Happy 85th Birthday to the United States Coast Guard Reserve, established on February 19, 1941!

The Coast Guard Reserve is a flexible, responsive operational force that exists to support the Coast Guard roles of maritime homeland security, national defense (domestic and expeditionary), and domestic disaster operations.

The Coast Guard depends on the Reserve force to be always ready to mobilize with critical competencies in boat operations, contingency planning and response, expeditionary warfare, marine safety, port security, law enforcement and mission support.

Reservists obtain and maintain proficiency and readiness through a combination of training and augmentation. Commanders, commanding officers and officers-in-charge shall ensure Reservists under their authority receive appropriate training and augmentation opportunities and administrative support. By doing so, Reserve forces will achieve mobilization readiness, while providing increased capacity to the local command. Individual Reservists shall obtain and maintain the skills and personal readiness required to mobilize.

Happy 83rd Birthday to the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve!

On this day in 1943, Gen. Thomas Holcomb, the 17th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, announced the formation of the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve.

Many brave young women were eager to serve in the military during World War II, often in spite of family wishes, negative public sentiment, and gendered prejudice. More than 22,000 officer and enlisted women answered the call to serve during World War II as part of the Women's Reserve. They filled more than 200 military assignments, including clerical work, parachute riggers, mechanics, radio operators, map makers, and welders. By June 1944, women reservists made up 85 percent of the enlisted personnel on duty at Headquarters Marine Corps and almost two-thirds of the personnel manning all major posts and stations in the United States and Hawaii.

After World War II concluded, the Women's Reserve was demobilized. On June 12, 1948, Congress passed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, enabling women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. armed forces.

Today, women have served in the United States Marine Corps in every rank from private to lieutenant general.

Bravo, ladies! Thank you for being trailblazers and for your service to our country.

Blooming with friendship on our Home's GAL-entine's Day, a day to appreciate and celebrate female friendship!

What a perfect way to brighten a gloomy, rainy day! Yesterday, our wonderful ladies came together for our "Blooming with Friendship" GAL-entine’s craft and luncheon. Each lady created a beautiful fresh-flower arrangement and enjoyed a delicious lunch from Panera Bread—the perfect recipe for smiles and laughter.

We also played a quick round of “Famous Pairs,” sharing favorite Hollywood couples and heartthrobs. The stories, laughs, and friendships made the day extra special.

Sometimes all it takes is fresh flowers, good food, and great company to make the day bloom!

Are you or a veteran you know looking for a beautiful place to live?

The California Department of Veterans Affairs is proud to operate eight Homes throughout the state. Veterans Home of California - Redding is the northernmost Home, located in beautiful Shasta County. We are a 26-acre facility in an area that is rural with some residential and commercial development and several nearby golf courses.

Check out these photos of our campus and our resident rooms! Every resident has a private bedroom and bathroom. All rooms are nicely appointed with a bed, desk, recliner, nightstand, bookcase, and a television. Instead of having small appliances in individual rooms, each neighborhood has an impressive self-serve kitchenette equipped with up-to-date appliances, a water and ice machine, and coffee maker.

Residents are welcome to decorate and personalize their rooms to their liking and our staff is happy to help!

Interested in a tour? Email paoredding@calvet.ca.gov, call (530) 224-3814, or send us a Facebook message and we'll get you scheduled.

🏈🍕 Super Bowl Tailgate Watch Party Fun! 🍕🏈

Our residents had a great time yesterday at our Super Bowl watch party! Everyone enjoyed pizza, snacks, and cold root beer while filling out football squares and making Super Bowl game predictions. The big question of the day was—would it be, the Seattle Seahawks or the New England Patriots?

No matter which team you were rooting for, one thing was clear… everyone was really there for the food! Full bellies, lots of laughs, and a fun afternoon enjoyed by all. What a winning celebration!

Last weekend our residents enjoyed a wonderful outing to the Riverfront Playhouse of Redding, CA to see “Drinking Habits”, and what a treat it was! The show was a sold-out crowd filled with laughter, clever twists, and great energy from start to finish.

We were especially proud to cheer on one of our own, Shawn from Activities, who played Father Chenille, alongside his wife, Sister Augusta, and even a special appearance by their daughter, Julia. Our veterans love supporting our Veterans Home of California - Redding family and local community theater, and this performance did NOT disappoint.

Beautiful weather, great seats, lots of laughs, and a chance to snap photos with the cast made this a truly memorable afternoon. Everyone had a fantastic time!

We highly recommend going to see it!

Who "kneads" biscuits & gravy?

What a wonderful morning! Our make-your-own biscuits and gravy activity was a big hit, with homemade bacon gravy and easy four-ingredient Bisquick biscuits that turned out delicious.

The best part was the memories shared: biscuits and gravy quickly topped the list of favorite comfort foods, bringing lots of laughs and great conversation. The group especially enjoyed teasing our Activities coordinator, Lisa, because today was her first time ever trying biscuits and gravy… and she's not sure if any restaurant will ever compare now!

A big thank you to Gloria, another of our Activities coordinators, for her amazing guidance with the bacon gravy. We had some truly wonderful cooks in the kitchen and ended up with full bellies!

Our Home's Winter Olympics are officially underway, and the competition was fierce and fun!

Game 1: Seated Speed Skating
Residents raced down the “track” using newspaper lanes — first to reach the prize wins!

Winners:
1st Place: Stella
2nd Place: Larry
3rd Place: John

Game 2: Precision Curling Challenge
Two teams — Blue Team vs. Red Team — worked together to roll ping-pong balls onto the blue tape target. The team with the most balls on target won!

Winning Team: Blue Team with 31 balls!

Game 3: Tower of Triumph
Using popsicle sticks and cups, residents competed to build the tallest pyramid.

Result: 3-way Tie between Larry, Jack and John!

So much laughter, teamwork, and friendly competition — this is what the Winter Olympics are all about!

The creativity of our fabulous Activities team never ceases to amaze us and keeps our residents engaged and having fun! Stay tuned for more games, more fun, and more memories being made.

Let's T-A-C-O 'bout a fabulous new lunch spot: JR. Grill Restaurant!

Our residents recently enjoyed a fantastic lunch outing at JR. Grill Restaurant, a newly opened, locally owned small business in Bella Vista. The food was authentic, homemade, and made fresh to order - including the corn tortillas - and even with our large group, every meal came out hot and delicious.

The service was wonderful and welcoming, plates were cleaned, stomachs were full, and everyone had a great time on a beautiful day.

A special thank you to our volunteer, Jerry, for recommending this great spot — it was a hit with everyone! We look forward to visiting again soon.

Our Story

The Veterans Home of California – Redding is located on 27 acres in the heart of the beautiful Northern Sacramento Valley. The majestic countryside setting of the home offers spectacular views of Mt. Shasta to the North and Mt. Lassen to the east and gorgeous mountains surrounding the region. Opened in October 2013, the VHC-Redding has 155 beds and presently offers Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) and skilled Nursing (SNF). The two levels of care will provide continuity in the lives of residents in a homelike atmosphere of dignity and respect. All healthcare needs, meals, transportation and activities are provided by the Veterans Home of California-Redding. Residents in the RCFE area are required to need minimal assistance and supervision with most activities of daily living. Licensed nurses are available at the home for necessary care. Skill nursing care is provided to residents on a 24-hour basis by licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants. Skilled nursing residents have greater access to rehabilitation therapies, nursing care, pharmacy management, structured activities and clinical dietary services. A memory care program with this level of care provides a supervised environment for veterans with symptoms of confusion, memory loss, difficulty making decisions, solving problems or participating in conversations. The veteran’s home provides California veterans with a living environment that protects their dignity and contributes to their feeling of self-reliance and self-worth. The City of Redding offers many cultural and educational opportunities for Home residents to enjoy. Redding also offers wonderful tourist attractions like Shasta and Whiskeytown lakes, Shasta Dam and the world famous Sundial Bridge. Veterans considering assisted living are encouraged to apply. To qualify, you must be a resident of California, age 55 or older (or younger if disabled), and have served honorably. Spouses are also eligible to apply with the Veterans.
