What Are the Different Types of Knee Injections for Arthritis?

At Dr. Nassar MD in Redlands, CA, we offer three primary types of knee injections to alleviate arthritis symptoms. The first is the Hyaluronic Acid Injections, which supplement your body's natural hyaluronic acid and lubricate the knee joint to enhance smooth movement and reduce pain. The second type, Corticosteroid Injections, directly injects powerful anti-inflammatory medication into the knee joint, offering rapid relief from severe inflammation and pain. Lastly, we have Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections which utilize the patient's own blood components to promote natural healing and reduce inflammation. Our team will work with you to determine the most suitable treatment option based on your specific condition and needs.

How Effective Are Knee Injections for Arthritis?

Knee injections for arthritis have proven to be an effective treatment method in alleviating pain and restoring mobility in many patients. At Dr. Nassar MD in Redlands, CA, we have seen significant improvements in our patients' quality of life following our treatment plans. The effectiveness of knee injections largely depends on the specific type of injection and the individual patient's condition. However, it's important to remember that while knee injections can effectively manage symptoms, they are part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may also include physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and, in some cases, surgery.

How Can Diabetes Be Managed?

Diabetes can be managed through diet, nutrition, oral medication, and insulin therapy. On top of these treatments, frequent blood sugar testing and carbohydrate counting are essential in diabetes management. Lowering glucose levels and keeping track of these levels will prevent life-threatening complications. Discuss with your doctor an emergency action plan if you suddenly go into an extreme hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic state.

What Is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of dementia. Dementia is a broader term for conditions caused by brain injuries or diseases that negatively affect memory, thinking, and behavior. These changes interfere with daily living.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. Most people with the disease get a diagnosis after age 65. If it's diagnosed before then, it's generally referred to as early onset Alzheimer's disease.

There's no cure for Alzheimer's, but there are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease.

What Causes Liver Problems in the Elderly?

The most common cause of liver problems in the elderly is ongoing substance use or an untreated disease that has been slowly degrading the liver over the years and causing scarring, which leads to cirrhosis. Substance use can include the overuse of alcohol or certain drugs such as Tylenol, as well as just the regular lifetime overuse of seemingly normal medications such as antifungal drugs, antidepressants, antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, and man-made hormones. Even extracts such as green tea and kava can lead to scarring and damage to the liver over years of continued use. Conditions such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C when left untreated can cause damage to the liver as well, causing patients to develop liver disease or go into liver failure. Lastly, there are also a number of health disorders that can lead to liver disease and liver failure in the elderly, including metabolic or vascular disorders such as autoimmune hepatitis and Wilson disease.

What Are Common Liver Diseases in the Elderly?

Some common liver diseases that become more prevalent or are at an increased risk of development in the elderly population include alcoholic liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, primary biliary cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver transplantation. Aging can make us more at risk of developing these diseases as well as contribute to worsened outcomes. These diseases continue to become more and more prevalent and of concern in the aging populations and continue to be a threat to the health of the community. However, liver biopsies are considered to be fairly safe and are an effective means of diagnosing the different common chronic liver diseases.

What Are the Benefits of Joint Injections?

The benefits of joint injections include:

- Rapid Pain Relief: Many patients experience immediate pain relief as the therapeutic medication goes directly to the problem area in the joint.

- Long-Lasting Results: Although some people notice near-immediate improvements to their pain, joint injections usually start working within 24-48 hours and often last for several weeks, sometimes longer. This makes joint injections highly beneficial for people who want fast relief from an arthritic flare-up or injury.

What Are Joint Injections?

Joint injections administer medications or other naturally occurring substances to the joints to treat pain due to arthritis, tendinopathy, bursitis, and other conditions. Joint injections are injected into the joints of the body, either into the synovial fluid of the joint or targeting the surrounding components of the joint, such as the ligaments, tendons, or bursae.

To maximize accuracy and effectiveness and to ensure that the needle is injected at its designated location, the doctor may use x-ray guidance (fluoroscopy) or ultrasound.
