🦵🏽Lower Body Series: The Quadriceps
Kicking off our lower body series with one of the most important muscle groups for movement—the quadriceps!
The quadriceps are a group of four muscles located on the front of the thigh. Their primary role is extending (straightening) the knee, but they also play a key role in hip flexion, shock absorption, and stabilizing the knee during everyday activities.
Whether you’re walking, running, climbing stairs, squatting, jumping, or simply getting up from a chair, your quads are hard at work. Strong and properly functioning quadriceps help improve performance, support healthy movement patterns, and reduce stress on the knee joint.
In physical therapy, we often assess quad strength and function when treating knee pain, post-surgical recovery, sports injuries, and movement limitations. Optimizing quad strength and control can be a critical step toward restoring mobility and preventing future injury.
⚠️ Remember: Exercise selection and movement mechanics should be individualized. Consult with your physical therapist to determine the most appropriate exercises, technique, and progression for your specific needs and goals.
Stay tuned as we continue breaking down the muscles of the lower body and their role in movement and rehabilitation!
